Why do websites say 4-6 weeks?

Why do websites say that Panther should be wrapped up within 4-6 weeks?!

Is it my imagination or are there still some huge holes in this OS? I mean, Active Directory seels to cause errors, Safari crashes like there's no tomorrow, American McGee's Alice crashes on launch, I just had to force an fsck on boot to get the machine to run right...

I mean, some of these are large issues, like Networking issues, especially with Active Directory.

4-6 weeks seems kinda on the short end. I'd rather see this finish in late October/November time...heck, I'd even wait for Panther to hit the shelves early December in time for holiday sales...just be sure your OS is 100% you say it is. You've got the world watching with the G5 and iTMS, don't blow it!

What's everyone else think about their Panther builds? I mean, most people post that they're too afraid to even install it!
 
Has Apple ever released anything prematurely? You can bet that they will not sell anything that isn't 100% percent ready. I expect they have stable builds of those things you mentioned, or are working on it. Oh, and BTW, I haven't installed it because doing so would be illegal. I could have my butt hauled into court and sued for installing it (I doubt I would, but it's possible) and I'm not taking that risk :)
 
I mean, I even know friends I made at WWDC are still having huge issues across the board. I mean, especially if Panther causes issues in Active Directory, being a big selling point to lost of companies, they won't use it if it'll trash their directory system.
 
Oh gosh, it's a beta, can't expect everything to be perfect :)
Oh, and what is Active Directory? I've never heard of it... :(
 
lol, joke if you will, but if Apple's trying to crack into the server market and gain business customers, most of them will have something like, or will have Active Directory already in place...it's highly unlikely most companies will just dump their entire network system and move to all Mac servers.

Obviously in Beta not everything is going to be perfect, but with the amount of issues left, you really think that this kitty will be uncaged in 4 weeks?! 3.5 3rd party builds and that's it?

You realize that FireWire doesn't even work in server? That seems like a big one to me! Lets not forget the fact that Server drops all of it's services about 10 times a day and at times says its an invalid license on it. Then works again.
 
To make sure I'm understood.

I have a ton of faith in Apple, but this OS isn't just an update to 10.2, there's so much new stuff and big new stuff, that I'd hate to see them rush.

I still pose my question...What does everyone else think is the reasonable timeframe after using Panther? Beyond that, have any of you noticed any huge bugs left? I'd really love to hear from anyone who's tried ActiveDirectory integration.
 
Okay, just to clear things up a bit. 4-6 weeks, that's "beginning to end of September". The FireWire issue is a Server one, and Client & Server don't have to ship the same day at all. It's the client version that gets the big attention of the press and everything. There are certainly a lot of issues with 7B28, but none that can't be solved in 4-6 weeks. Do you know how big the team is that's ONLY working on getting Active Directory stuff right? Me neither. No idea. Maybe it's _one_ guy doing it right, maybe there's a dozen Apple people with two dozens of Microsoft friends to help them. We dunno. And then, last but not least: Yes, Jaguar was kind of an early release. We were waiting eagerly for 10.2.1 when 10.2 was finally officially released. Same for 10.1 and 10.0.
 
Again, I'm not saying it will be in poor interest to cut it off then, I'm saying that IMO 4 weeks seems to be on the very short end.
 
Well, I personally don't see Panther happening too soon (as you can read on macnews.net.tc), either, but 6 weeks can be a long time (time enough) if the right people are on the right tasks.
 
I'm waiting for Exposé. That's gonna be a killer feature.
I'm using Max's Aqua Extreme theme, it's a pretty nice Panther take-off.
 
Hmm... No, Aqua Extreme was created long before the Panther 'NewAqua' by Apple. And they don't _really_ look similar... However, I've heard that Max was working on a Panther-esque theme.
 
the wwdc build 7A179 said you will not be able to update to Panther GM from it, but after reading the 7B28 pdf, it said no such thing...does that mean ittle upgrade fine?
 
Iverson, you never answered dlloyd's question: What is Active Directory?

Apple has a history of releasing OS's that require patching, though usually not as majorly as Windows. The entire history of OS X has been one patch after another. 10.0 was almost completely crap; 10.1 was better, but it still didn't have the formula down; 10.2 brought OS X into the realm of awesome, but even Jaguar had its fair share of problems, and every patch seemed to fix some and introduce others. 10.3 will be no different: for the most part, it will be everyone's dream come true, but there will still be crashes, kernel panics, and the usual beehive of previous incarnations.

Remember, OS X is only 3 years old. Windows, in its current state, has been around since 1995 and therer are still problems with it that Microsoft simply doesn't or won't address. At least Apple (usually) notices and tries to fix its problems.

Okay, so that's a lie, but come on! It's been broken since it appeared, and it seems like such a trivial thing to fix. Not to mention I've been waiting for it since System 7.
 
I'm beat, so I'm going to bed, but lemme answer that question fast...

Active Directory is a mixture of Kerberos authentication and LDAP for storing user profiles. It's native to Windows and this is Apple's first attempt to integrate it into their OS, at least to this extent. In AD, you can create user accounts, or machine accounts, and allow a user to login with their user name and password from any machine that supports it and use their entire environment.

This also ties into Kerberos single sign on. You log into AD, then, when you connect to anything else in that domain that AD is in, you don't have to type in your user info, you're pre-authenticated.

Its a pretty popular solution in business, so seemless integration is integral. Apple offered integration before, but you HAD to create your own schema changes.
 
Well, that's the one I was looking at when I've answered you. It may be a newer version, but it just doesn't look like Panther's Aqua. ;-) ... It's certainly a bit darker and grayer than the original Aqua, too, but it lacks the decent use of stripes and the other 'features' of NewAqua.
