Why is my Mac OSX 10.5.8 changing old files on cd to unix exacutables?

I have old filing CDs from 1993 with a lots of files I would like to retrieve.
Most of the files are from early mac programs like Photoshop (2, 2.5 and 3), Pagemaker and Freehand were saved without extensions.
When the CD is in the Mac all files without extensions are displayed as a Unix Executable File and my newer programs like Photoshop CS3 wont recognise them even when I know that the file is a tif or bmp etc and I change or add the extension.

It sounds like the CD was burned in a format that doesn't support resource forks and/or extended attributes of files, and so Mac OS X has nothing to associate those files with.

Sometimes, it's as simple as copying the file to your hard drive, then manually adding the proper extension. If that doesn't work, try either changing the "Open With..." setting in the "Get Info" window of the file, or launching the program and trying to open the file through the "File > Open" menu. If the latter works, re-saving the file to a new filename ought to restore the application association for future double-click opening.
