Why the volume key lag in Jaguar?

Ever since I got Jaguar I've noticed that it often takes around 5 seconds for the volume to change after pressing one of the volume keys. After that the volume keys work instantly for a while but then it goes back again. Never had this problem with 10.1.

I've reinstalled the OS a couple times and even got my PB replaced (after dropping it!) since getting Jaguar and always the same problem.

Anybody else have this problem?

i don't have that, but something else:

when you press the volume UP button constantly it will raise very "freaky" to the max. It raises to the max and then suddenly it goes back to the minimum and then again to the max and to then the average, minimum, max, average, min and finally it stops at MAX. Really weird things!

It's your amount of RAM. The same thing happend to me when I had 128MB. now I have 384MB and it comes up right when u hit the button. X.2 needs more RAM then X.1. Don't ask my why, it just runs much better with more RAM

Happened to me a few times, every now and then it'll happen again but it's very rare.
It seemed to start after the 10.2.2 Carbon Sound Manager update, but it's so rare that it doesn't bother me at all.

I have 512MBs of RAM on my system...

I had the following problem for some time (and I guess that RAM is not the reason), but it dissapeared when I installed the Carbon Sound Manager via SU.

When I tried to adjust the volume with the keyboard, I get to see the -how do you call that-pop-up that the volume is changing, but the volume itself didn't change. I could however adjust the volume with the slide bar in the menu bar...

I am still wondering what's the reason for this, I am wondering if playing with Audio Hijack could have caused this, or if it is just Jaguar

edit: -> I just want to indicate that I had this problem on my G4 -1Gb RAM...

i think my problem hasn't to do anything with RAM

so what's wrong with my volume key?

senne. (btw: hallo aaike van belgi‘!)

Well, I don't think it's a memory problem since I have 1 GB of ram in my PB. Unless maybe if I have bad ram or something, but I haven't noticed anything else really weird.

senne, you're problem sounds really weird! You should get a screenshot movie with Snapz Pro X (if you have it) and post it or something! :)

Interesting that the Carbon Sound Manager update seems to have caused the problem for Tormente, fixed the problem for aaike and done nothing for me! At least we know that iMac's, PowerMac's & PowerBook's all have this problem in one form or another.

Nobody ever had this problem in 10.1 though, right?

these are the movies:

Volume UP

Volume DOWN

I pressed the volume button for ± 8 seconds, continues.

Did this while playing music in iTunes, running Navigator, Photoshop and System Prefs with 256MB RAM on an iMac G3.

Yikes, that is a freaky looking problem. Do you have any third party background (or foreground!) apps, like hotkey apps or anything that are running?

do you mean with hotkey-apps, XKeys for example? if so: yes. But i had the problem already before i installed XKeys

My new G3 800 iBook (640mb Ram) does pretty similar things.

Pressing the volume keys is more pot luck than anything. Often it lags and takes 2-3 seconds to respond. It also often just goes to any old volume it feels like. For example, sometimes if you keep pressing the 'volumne up' key it goes up a bit, then jumps back down a whole load, then continues going up.

All very strange.

It has always done this - right from initial install of the OS (10.2.1) and after first upgrade (10.2.2).

I wonder if 10.2.3 will do anything to fix it?!?!

Senne - Did you do a fresh install or upgrade of OSX 10.1 to 10.2? I had the same problem in my Powerbook G4 400 rev A until I put a new hard drive in it and did a fresh install and a lot of small problems cleared right up. That's harsh, but I had the same lag but the fresh install of 10.2 cleared it up. Even through the 10.2.3 upgrades.

Yes it does. However, you can do it two ways. I believe on 10.2 install disk there is an option for to archive your apps while doing an install. What I did was first backup my old drive to a firewire (using Carbon Copy Cloner) disk. Then after I did a fresh install, I just copied over the programs preference files (and make sure you have the serial numbers for your programs handy). This took me about 2 hours (after the install of the hard disk). Just make sure you have a backup. I can't stress that enough.
