Wireless Mouse: Please Help with Scrolling Side to Side

Amie

Mac Convert for Life
I love my new Logitech Cordless Optical Mini, and the scroll wheel works great for up and down, but I cannot, for the life of me, get it to scroll from side to side. It *does* have this feature, though. It's probably just me, as I've never used a mouse with a scroll wheel before. Is there a trick to the side-to-side scrolling?

Did you install the drivers for the mouse? Side-to-side scrolling really isn't supported natively under Mac OS X except for the Mighty Mouse, which requires a driver to be installed.

I don't see anything mentioned about side-to-side scrolling, though. Before installing the Logitech drivers, you may want to give USBOverdrive a try:

I used to use it and it worked wonderfully under OS 10.1 and 10.2, though I haven't used it since then. It may or may not provide a "higher-quality" or "more configurable" driver over the Logitech one.

No, I didn't install any drivers. It said no drivers necessary. Just plug the USB receiver in and you're ready to go. And it's true--that's all I did, and it works great. Except for that darn side-to-side scrolling!

This is what I have: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2146,CONTENTID=10522

Do I need to install a driver for that?

No, you don't need to install drivers for it, but side-to-side scrolling is not natively supported in Mac OS X -- hence, the need for drivers for that particular function.

Mac OS X has support for up/down scroll wheels, first, second, third, fourth, and fifth mouse buttons -- possibly even sixth and seventh like on some of the new mice. It does not have support for side-to-side scrolling natively. All mice, whether they have more functions than these or not, will be limited to these functions.

The short answer is that I have no idea if the Logitech software or USBOverdrive will provide side-to-side scrolling. This poor guy never got it working:

It wouldn't hurt to install the Logitech software and see what happens...

Dumb work-around suggestion. Hold down the "shift" key while scrolling up and down, and you will end up scrolling left and right, respectively.

I know, I know. Not what you wanted. But if you want to scroll sideways, that's the best option I've found, besides just buying a Mighty Mouse...

I see! OK, thanks. You just taught me something. I didn't realize it depends on the OS, applications, etc. one is using. Installed the software--and now everything works fine! I LOVE this mouse! :D

No, that's not what I wanted, but thanks for telling me that! Pretty neat little workaround to know! Sort of like an Easter egg, yes?
