wireless woes w/ new macbook

My basic setup:
basestation: Mac G4 (mirror face) desktop connected to the internet using bellsouth fastaccess dsl via a westell model 327w modem/wireless router.

remote laptop: MacBook Pro 15" (just purchased last week) w/ built-in airport card.

My basic problem:
I cannot get my wireless connection from the laptop fully established. It's strange b/c the two pieces of equipment apparently recognize one another and are communicating (The airport in my laptop sees the network and my system prefs>network status shows a green light and says that "airport is connected to the network westxxxx. you are connected to the internet via airport"), but when I launch safari, i just get a screen that says "you are not connected to the internet…can't open the page…because your computer isn't connected to the internet." I've managed to turn all wireless security/password features off (I think). The "wireless" status light on the modem/router flashes green but never goes solid green.

Anybody got any ideas?

Agree that's strange...

Is there any possibility you haven't yet set up your router to do the PPPoE authentication, and you are trying to get each computer to do PPPoE connection/authentication? Only one computer could operate in that situation.

Well, I think the answer is "no", at least not deliberately or as far as I can tell. (I'm not all that savvy when it comes to this stuff. I've learned more in the last 24hrs. than I ever wanted to know, really.)

So far all the troubleshooting I've tried to do has been pretty much limited to the Airport and TCP/IP tabs in my network prefs. I've checked the PPPoE tab on both machines and they are both inactive at the moment. Are you saying that at least on of them should be set up and activated somehow?

Here's some additional info that might be helpful: when I first started trying to troubleshoot this, based on what I dug up on the net, a lot of folks said that DHCP was often a problem, so I manually assigned an ip address on my laptop. That at least established some kind of connection where before there had been none. In addition, I also figured out how to use the setup software for the modem/router to "ping" that new, manual ip address from the other machine and it was able to find it. So information is apparently flowing both ways, but I still can't use the internet from my laptop.

That's good, you want PPPoE Off for both computers, and set up in the router.
Try setting Configure using DHCP and then restart both computers to force them to re-negotiate an IP address.

Alright! That worked! I thought that I had re-tried that approach at some point, but I guess not. Thanks a million!
