wysiwyg font menu?

i really miss being able to pull down a font menu and see exactly what the type face looks like to decide which to use. is there a haxie or any other way to bring this to os x, particularly in appleworks? i've been looking around for something like this and i just haven't found anything.

Is this a Jag thing? because my AppleWorks 6.2.4 in 10.1.5 displays the font menu in the actual font.

That would be pretty terrible if Jag put a stop to that, especially since there's a whole page on the Apple site devoted to telling everyone how great their font-handling is :(

For my computer (Mac OS X 10.1.5), M$ Office v. X ($20 w/ university discount) displays the font menu in the actual fonts. If M$ Office is cheap enough at the university, it might be worth the purchase.

If you need to see what the fonts look like, Apple was very kind enough to provide us with an AppleScript that takes every font installed in the System folder (excludes User folder) and places them in a TextEdit document for printing. The file is located here:

/Library/Scripts/Info\ Scripts/Font\ Sampler.scpt

translates into

Your_Hard_Drive/Library/Script/Info Scripts/Font Sampler.scpt

no, i'm using 10.1.5 like my sig says. and i don't get a wysiwyg menu. perhpas this is a pref i haven't enbled or maybe you installed a haxie way back when and forgot. at least you've assured me it can be done. now i just need to figure out how.

niles - i can always type a few characters and see. the idea of opening another document is more effort than its worth. and you should know that i wouldn't use office if m$ gave it to me. in fact, they would have to give me a pretty good hourly salary for me to even consider it. remember who you're talking to here bro.:D

I know, I only use M$ Office when I have to. Almost all of my word processing is done with TextEdit because RTF is a good standard.

Yeah RTF is good, but I can do that in Appleworks of MS Office (though TextEdit launches about a billion times faster than office :) )

Heh yeah actually, I just got this AlphaSmart 3000, which is a keyboad with a 4-line display I use to take notes in class an then download it to any app (it sends the file as ASCII keystrokes). MS Office can't keep up at fastest transfer speed, but TextEdit seems to be able too (so can pico:) ).

ok, i found it. it's in the general preferences in AW, not in the text prefs. i might have disabled it back before i bought more ram or before the 10.1 update when things were so slow because even now it takes noticably longer to load with wysiwyg. but not so much longer that it's not worth it. i've got it turned back on now.

thanks to all for helping me figure out such a simple question.

sorry michael, somehow or another i missed that one!! you must have posted it right after i left the site so that i was still logged in and it didn't show up as a new post. my bad. thanks alot for taking the time to have found it for me!! but at least it was your original post that led me to go looking deeper for it myself. thanks again!!

since i've mostly been typing school papers for the last year or so, i haven't needed to use more than a couple of fonts that i know well. but i noticed i missed this when i went to make some b-day cards this week. i have more to make tomorrow so i figured i'd ask around.

you may not have saved christmas, but you helped make somebody's b-day card a little nicer :)
