What's an .xpi file? Can't seem to track down much information. Is it a plugin for firefox??

This is basically a ZIP file that, when opened by the browser utility, installs a browser extension. This extension applies to both Mozilla and Firefox browsers.

That helps enormously. It wasn't obvious at first, but it's definitely a Windows file....so I needn't trouble my pretty little head about it!

Not necessarily, it's just the file format for Mozilla and Firefox extensions and plug-ins. It's the same for all ports of Mozilla-based applications, whether they be on a Mac, Windows, or Linux/Unix computer.
