I have no idea.. But I'm having same issue, only that when i disconnect and reconnect again, it appears as <name>-2 and -3 and -4 and so on.. So I join you here and ask why? !
Just a side note.. End-of-file error pops up when the file was closed before it finished saving. Happens often, as noted earlier, when saving to shared harddisks. Happened all the time at my ex-work, mostly with Photoshop files... Extremely annoying.

Now I have tried to connect to disk through an USB. And it changes nothing.. I cannot see my external disk on my desktop, nor I can see it in Disk utility.
Any suggestions?
When I run disk utility, only my own disk pops up there. But I don't know if mounted disks are supposed to be there at all. At any rate, I have repaired permissions; but that doesn't help..
I was thinking of mail provider. For instance, at home I can use both my internet provider's outgoing mail server; and my native gmail outgoing server. At work I must use internet provder's server and nothing else.
When it comes to ports Im quite clueless, sorry. When I need to fix the port...
Look it up. If it is, for instance, gmail, google "outgoing server gmail". Also check if outgoing server need authentication. What mail provider are you using?
How long has it been spinning? I was having same issue when there was a problem with outgoing server. It spins for quite some time. Double-check that you are using the correct outgoing server, to make sure it's the same on all of your computers on the network.
It sounds to me like you do have a full disk problem.. I remember on classic mac OS you would run defragmentation; but I don't remember for the life of me if 10.4 still has original OS implemented. Have you tried making space on disk (burning some DVDs or dumping files onto external back up...
Does it complain when you try to delete trash or when you try to move your firefox into trash? If the file is locked, you can try emptying your trash while holding option key. If the file wont move into trash because it's in use, I suggest you check your activity monitor and kill firefox process...
