Can't share printer from 10.3 to XP

bobw, Thanks a ton for the detailed advice. As it turns out, it wasn't necessary. Despite the fact that the XP box has a message telling me "can't connect" or something like that, printing actualy works just fine. The error message itself was bogus. I'm going to hang on to those steps...

Can't share printer from 10.3 to XP

Thanks for the responses. It turns out it was a major case of user stupidity. The Mac was connected to "the outside world" but not to my little home net. D'OH! Anyway, XP can SEE the printer now, but still can't use it. Can't connect, authentication failed, something like that. Any tips on...

    tape backups for 10.1

Hi, I have an old SCSI Travan drive that I want to see if I can use for bakups on my OS X box. It's APS branded (model # 2094-008P, if that means anything to anybody), and Retrospect says the guts are Seagate. I've got an Adaptec SCSI card (2096, I think) and I just downloaded the driver...

[HOWTO] - Find files of same type or creator as another file

What I mean is the 4-byte file type that Mac OS has always used. That doesn't show up in the info. I know how to find all files that have a given extension, but that doesn't help me here, as there's no guaranteed association between file type and extension.

[HOWTO] - Find files of same type or creator as another file

So, Sherlock's advanced options let you find by, among other things, file type and creator. Great. Just please don't tell me I have to use ResEdit or some similar tool to find that info to get a file's 4 digit type or creator and then enter than into Sherlock. The Finder's info doesn't seem to...

    Adding user on command line

    It worked! Thanks!

    Adding user on command line

Hmm, I thought I tried all that. I may not have done uid though. I think a light bulb just came on here. I'm guessing that when you do a read or a list and it shows the id and name, the id in "users" is not the same as the uid, but rather, is just netinfo's internal id. Yes? I'll give it a...

    Adding user on command line

Sorry if this is a FAQ--I figured it would be and tried a search, but nothing came up. Anyway, I'd like to be able to add a new user from the command line, rather than using the stupid, obnoxious NetInfo Manager GUI tool. Blecch! I tried using niutil, just guessing at stuff to add based on...

    Two weird and annoying problems

    1) When using Netscape, occasionally the cursor just plain disappears. Often random acts of clicking on the desktop, dock, and other apps will bring it back, but other times I have to quite Netscape. (Oops. Just after posting I found this behavior in another Classic app.) 2) At first I...

    I give up

Well, yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that what's broken is broken. G5 was a typo. Should have been G4. doNt yu ever mAKe typoOs whin yoo ar 0Nn cr@ck?

    I give up

Boiling G3/PIII comparisons down to "this one is faster" doesn't say a whole lot, since "faster" has to be qualified by which tests, and how much faster. You also have to consider the OS ans apps running on the chip. Even if G3 blew PIII out of the water in every pure hardware test imaginable...

    I give up

I've been using 95, 98, and NT for a few years now. I did so reluctantly becuase I had to for work. Meanwhile, I tried to find ways to do the same work (Java development, mostly) on Mac. I wanted to stay with Mac, and I though OSuX would finally provide the tools I needed to use Mac for both...

    Java extensions?

Does Java's extension mechanism not work on OS X? I've creted a lib/ext directory in every place I can think of, but jar files that I put there don't get searched as they would under, say, /usr/local/jdk/jre/lib/ext in Linux.

    I give up

I, too, don't clutter my desktop. My point was that I don't want to click the app in the dock and then have to sort through that app's windows. I want to be be able to click in the dock to get directly to the window I want. This only works if I've previously genied the window away. The reason I...
