    Painfully Slow Login

DeltaMac, Thanks. I did indeed try that a few days ago and meant to post the results, but missed that out. The new account does seem to load much faster, so I've made a list of the basic pref files created for a new account, copied all my existing pref files to a new folder and then deleted...

    HP Printer Software Update 2.6

Hello to all, I've had some new updates pop up in the last couple of days with the HP printer update above being the main one I'm concerned about. I bought an all-in-one printer/scanner with OCR HP unit about a year and a half ago and was very happy with it. Then, after I upgraded to...

    Painfully Slow Login

colorminator, I'm not part of a work group or windows domain. It's just me and the router to the outside world. Can anyone comment on my preferences question above? Is that an avenue for investigation?

    Painfully Slow Login

Here's a thought: years ago before I was a Mac user, a colleague at the company I was then working at was both the internal and customer facing Mac guru. I remember him always saying that if something wasn't working right to "dump prefs and reboot". What is the likelihood I've got a back prefs...

    Painfully Slow Login

Took out the HP Scheduler, but still takes a good while before the desktop items appear (before this was a problem all items appeared in about 2 seconds or less). At a loss as to what to do now. Any further suggestions, anyone? BTW - Whenever I run "Repair Disk Permissions" it takes about...

    Painfully Slow Login

Satcomer, How likely is removing the HP Scheduler from my Login Items to cause a problem with my printing? I need to be able to print things for my work, so can't afford to mess this up. Thanks

    Painfully Slow Login

Two user added fonts. Both added several months ago before this became a problem. Two login items: iTunesHelper and HP Scheduler (both are unchecked, so shouldn't be running at login). Thanks.

    Painfully Slow Login

Hello to all, A few weeks ago I started experiencing painfully slow login times. By this I mean the amount of time to get a usable desktop after entering my username and password after boot up (up to 30 seconds). If I then launch an app like Firefox, this can take a further 30 seconds to be...

IMAP Mail Backups on MacBook Pro

Hello to all, I've just tried backing up my IMAP mail on my MacBook Pro via Thunderbird 3.1.7, which seems to have worked fine. Under my_user_name/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/profile_ID/ImapMail/account_name/ it has created three entries for each of the folders I wanted to back up...

    Sound/Voice Recording Software for OSX

Hello to all, A friend recently asked me if I could recommend any software for the Mac that would enable her to play a voice file, see the rise and fall of the speakers intonation and then record herself to try to match that intonation (she is learning Norwegian and apparently it has some...

    Definitively Uninstalling Apps

Hello to all, Before Christmas I had a need to evaluate some new bookkeeping software on my MBP. I must have tried some 10-12 apps before settling on the one I wanted. Each time I installed an application and decided I wasn't interested in using it, I uninstalled it with AppCleaner...

Mac Word 2008 Locks Up System

DeltaMac, Am running that update now, but can you tell me where it stores a downloaded update before it installs it? I ran this a few minutes ago, but accidentally clicked on close while trying to close another window. I'm running it again now, but I've got a feeling it will have downloaded it...

Mac Word 2008 Locks Up System

Hello to all, I've been doing some extensive editing of a .docx file and am finding that if I don't close Word and then re-open it after about 20 minutes, it hangs up my entire system and I have to force a hard reboot. To give some background information, I was at my local Apple Store...

When Should Higher Fan Speeds Kick In?

calamarain, Thanks for your feedback. Over what period of time does it take for your fans to rev up to 5000rpm? Part of what concerns me is the amount of time it seems to take before anything starts to ramp up. That and the fact that back in the summer when things go anywhere near 90C both...

When Should Higher Fan Speeds Kick In?

UPDATE: I went back to the Apple Store yesterday and they re-installed the OS and opened up my MBP and cleaned some dust out of it (not much, they said). I then stressed my laptop while in the store and got the temp back up to 91C. The fans, after several minutes, slowly rose to 4100rpm and a...

When Should Higher Fan Speeds Kick In?

Diablo, I was just doing some PDF to text conversions with an OCR tool and notice that my MBP CPU temp has gone up to 91C and the fans are still turning at between 1990-2006rpm. Does that still sound reasonable? It's pretty bloody hot, I have to say!

When Should Higher Fan Speeds Kick In?

Thanks, Diablo. Glad to hear that about the differences. I wasn't aware. I'll just accept that this is the way it is while keeping an eye on the temp and fan speeds as time goes on.
