Use Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your hd to an external hd. I do so routinely to an external Firewire drive (which is also bootable) to run OS 9 utilities - Techtool Pro 3.x and DiskWarrior.

Thanks, Cheryl. I went ahead and did that and the system is now up and running and seems to be faster than before. I also did not reinstall OS 9.xx as I have not used it for over 6 months. I'll just rely on Classic if I have to use any OS 9 apps.:)

Yes, it will burn at 2X speed, but finding 2X media compatible with the 103 is not easy. I bought some 2X blanks recently only to find it would only burn at 1X on my Apple Superdrive. When buying media, make sure that it states which drives it is compatible with.:confused:

I just purchased a LaCie FW DVD-R drive with the Pioneer DVD-R 105 in it from MacMall. This is the one in the case prceeding the new D2 case. I got it for $340 (as opposed to the D2 for $399). It does not need any firmware upogrades to write at 4X. Hope this helps.:D

I have a 60GB drive in an ADS Firewire case to which I clone my main HD. I boot from it successfully everytime to run diagnostics on my main drive. :cool:

I just downloaded the upgrade and after installation, VPC still shows as V5.02 and I cannot use some of the new features because my "add-ons are outdated". It does, however, start and close much quicker. I have not run any programs on it as yet so cannot offer any comments at this time.

I use Ritek brand discs from Rima.com and have never had a problem with them. Meritline.com also offers good discs which I have used before. I think they currently have a promotion going on. Check Dealmac.com for daily promotions.
