    Bouncing Email?

I get almost no spam anymore just by using rules. Just make a rule called junk or whatever and add criteria. I use "if from contains" a lot, since most junk comes from a few domains. Just delete all the address except for the domain name. Some of the crap that comes from hotmail accounts and...

    good x window manager?

OroborosX is an awesome integration into aqua. You really can't tell the difference until you see your cursor change. If aqua like is what you want, this is clearly the way to go.

    Linux on PPC

Ah yes, the bloatedness of OS X. Hopefully Apple will continue to put it through some slimming down workouts. However, this is something I've been curious about for awhile. It seems that Linux on PPC and Linux on x86 would be a pretty good comparison of speeds. Better than the old Photoshop...

    Most unstable program

Haven't used MSN messenger, opting for Fire instead. I have to vote for OmniWeb though. Then again I'm using the Sneaky Peeks, so what do I expect?

best way to upgrade to DVD-R

Why would I need to get a new monitor? I thought the new ADC based Macs still supported VGA? Frankly getting a dual 800 G4 sounds like the best option. For roughly the same price as an iMac I get two processors, can use all my SDRAM from my current G4, can use dual displays if I want to, and...

best way to upgrade to DVD-R

OK, so here is my pseudo dilemma. I will be getting married this summer. Rather than pay for some lame videographer I plan to borrow 2 or 3 DV cameras from my father-in-law's work and just leave them running at various angles, then plug them in and use iMovie to make an acceptable (and far...

    Weird Problems...

I just saw your location, and had to comment. Is A&M any better at supporting the Mac? I got my Mac my senior year, and CIS was pretty clueless. That and the fact that last I saw they had all-in-one G3s as their most modern Macs. Hope that's improved. What are you trying to share? You could...

    new wife... old permissions

I will try moving all of Quicken to the shared folder, that might work. It's not too big a deal because I am not concerned about the physical security of the machine, and no FTP account can get out of its own home directory. To create the user group I duplicated the staff entry in netinfo and...

    Multiple users accessing same Quicken?

I see on Intuit's site that they say Quicken won't work with multiple users. This sounds like a challenge to me. Is there no way for two users to have access to the same Quicken data? It seems dumb to have family members log on as someone they're not just to access shared financial records.

    new wife... old permissions

OK, so I'm trying to change some things for when my present girlfriend/future wife moves in. I added her as a user no problem (I could just give her admin privileges, but I think that's more than she wants) . However, I'm having trouble sharing file permissions. I found instructions on...

    My WinXP experience

Did you catch the last line or so of the article where it talks about M$'s chief security guy leaving to work for the government as the head computer security guru in the land? Yeah, looks like he did a bang up job fixing all that ails M$ products. Let's put him in charge! Then again working...

    remapping minimize button?

Ah, but if you hid them you wouldn't get to see the contents of the window in the dock. You'd have a boring factual text label pop out from the program icon. How is Steve going to demo that during a keynote? No, it's much cooler to have a 4 pixel x 4 pixel movie playing in the dock. Steve likes...

    Changing where stickies live?

OK, so barring that I have an interim solution. It sure could use some improving, so I'm all ears. I set up a cron event to copy the .stickiesdatabase to my idisk every 30 minutes. I could of course do this more often. I then wrote a script that on login mounts the idisk, copies the...

    Changing where stickies live?

I had a (for me at least) brilliant thought. I use my powerbook at school, and my G4 at home. I also love stickies, and throw random thoughts about papers I'm writing or to dos or whatever in them. My brilliant thought would be to save the data in them to my iDisk so my stickies at home and...

    imac for-g3 b&w tower

I'd say go for it, that's quite the trade. Make sure your friend knows what he's doing though, if you want to keep him as a friend. If he's uninformed and comes back a week later accusing you of ripping him off, that might not be so great for your relationship. Do you just get the G3, or a...

    Samba SWAT problem, CLI blues

OK, here's the deal. I have samba installed so that everything runs nicely. The only problem is launching it. In theory it should happen at boot up, si? If I look in the process viewer, there are smbd and nmbd. However it's not really running, or at least not what I need because I can't connect...

    i386 Executable on 10.1 cd

I don't think Apple would be sitting on an Intel OSX port to release as a last gasp should they go belly up. I think it's far more likely that they are doing this to: a) prepare should PPC (esp the Motorola faction) go downhill and not leave Apple able to compete with Intel/AMD b) keep the...

    a bit extreme...

Am I the only one who really doesn't like the rainbow apple? It just seems very '70s to me... like Activision and Atari. I prefer the solid ones. I also think that's a crazy tattoo. I thought about putting mine on my back like that (a little lower), but an Apple? To me that's just not cool...
