    Thread Rating Conundrum

It has come to my attention that the "rating" mechanism is being ignored by the vast majority of the people here. That's fine. I've been ignoring it till now. But it's there, and the people who use it seem to be using it either as a joke or as a means to falsely inflate their credibility...

    1.25GHZ is just overclocked 1GHZ

The point is not the fact that the 1GHz and 1.25GHz chips use the same fab process. That's no big deal. It's made painfully obvious that the circuit diameter didn't shrink and the core voltage remained the same by the size of the heat sink and the consumed wattage. What pains me is the manner...

    OSX System On RAID?

I have 2 30's making a 60 but I don't boot off of that. It's sweet, it's easy, it's everything I hoped it would be. Just be aware that in a striped config, if any drive fails the whole raid set fails. Your data is more fragile on a stripe set than on a single drive.

Defrag the OSX disk ? How ?

Drive 10 is good, but slow. And I don't know how intelligent the optimization is, but they do call it optimization and not just defrag. Yes, it repairs and defrags. So does techtool pro. If you run UFS and/or you keep your drives at less than 50% capacity, you'll likely never see a...

    how to crash a mac

not that I'm recommending anyone do this ... ever. But here's how I crashed mac OS 10.2 on my dual G4 450 tower. First, be a dumbass and open the computer case while it's running... that doesn't hurt anything mind you, but these two things are essential to the process. Two, notice how...

    osX on a imac 333mhz?

I have an iMac 233 and a powerbook 233 both running 10.2.2 and they rock. Definitely doing things more reliably and easily than 9 can do. I have 384 meg and 12 G in the -book and 512 / 30 in the iMac. More RAM and faster HD's are noticeable improvements in both. I wish I could set more...

    usability

I just wanted to say that this has been one of the most interesting, mature, truly two sided debates I've seen on this board in a long time. It's had it's moments and all, but generally a good ride, especially when it remained on topic. Hi, Ed. :-)

    Jaguar crashes!

I'm not ruling out RAM, but have you run a disk utility? Drive X is sweet. HFS+ is still fragile, even on OS X. It sounds like netinfo is dying on you guys. In which case archiving and installing while preserving the users would bring the problem with you. If NI dies, nothing launches...

    usability

Here's something Apple has done right: System wide conventions. Clipboard, keyboard shortcuts, filetypes, etc. There was a question about where the stop button is in iTunes ... it's Apple-period. That's been the stop command forever. It was the first thing I thought of, and it worked as...

    Motorola PowerPC 7457

I hear you, and I do think IBM has a performance oriented solution for the desktop and server room with quite the future ahead of it. My point remains that people are getting all worked up about stuff that really doesn't matter. I think energy consumption is an issue. I really want a new dual...

    Motorola PowerPC 7457

All I really want is SMP. I'd take a pair of G3's any day... if they could really do it that is. Screw altivec. The major thing it did for me was speed up the UI on OS X, now we're offloading that to the graphics card. OK, so it can rip to mp3 darn fast, but that's not a huge part of my...

AMD opteron, beats all CPUs in latest benchmarks!

Life, the Universe, and everything: Where'd the subject line go? ManicDevlin ... was banned once if I can homophone correctly. He's better behaved now it seems, but still incapable of determining what his purpose is here. Some seem to confuse aggrivation with attention. 64 bit computing...

    DRM evil comes home

first, look at this: http://conferences.oreilly.com/macosxcon/ Add to that the knowledge that no one else here seems to have this file, and it's starting to look like the Apple isn't going rotten. I googled for the mystery file and got a couple of folder listings from people who don't speak...

type "which AppleSystemProfiler" get back to us with what it says. mine says /usr/sbin/AppleSystemProfiler which does indeed launch Classic. odd. I can't currently find the one that is supposed to be command line OS X.
