Safari hijack? "updateplayer.us" demanding to be installed!

I've had no start up problems since the last reported one about a month ago. I've done all the upgrades since then too. I had a brief panic today, and I'm now thinking that it might have been the same thing that caused the adware link to appear last time. I now think it's likely that I...

Safari hijack? "updateplayer.us" demanding to be installed!

As I said earlier, I suspected Photobucket. Now I'm pretty sure! There's an adlink to a Genieo download on my photobucket today. Although the ads there can follow previous things you click, so it may be an effect rather than a cause.

Safari hijack? "updateplayer.us" demanding to be installed!

Thanks again. Now at a different hotel and it all seems back to normal. I ran through the checks shown in the link and found nothing. If any more turns up. I will have another go.

Safari hijack? "updateplayer.us" demanding to be installed!

On holiday in France from UK. MacBook Pro. OSX 10.9.2 Safari 7.0.3 Last night I was in the hotel, connected to the internet using the hotel wi-fi "WifiPass from Passman". Safari suddenly posted a new page in a new tab from "updateplayer.us" demanding an "urgent update to FlashPlayer" and a...

    MacBook Pro failed to startup.

I haven't installed any hackies or any unofficial software. I've just checked the few extensions that I have and they all appear in a list of Maverick extensions that I Googled, so I think everything is OK on the face of it. There are no extensions that are older than the laptop itself. I...

    MacBook Pro failed to startup.

I updated Firefox and it has done it once since then. But that was straight afterwards at the next start-up. So OK for over a week. The laptop is set up to startup with all windows restored as it was when shut down.

    MacBook Pro failed to startup.

Did it again this morning. Started at the second attempt. The only oddity, which I may have noticed last time, is that Firefox was odd. It showed it was opened at startup with the icon marked in the dock, but when I clicked the icon Firefox seemed to start from scratch. I have just upgraded...

    MacBook Pro failed to startup.

The MacBook has been updated to 10.9.2 for a while with no problem. I've started the thing four times since, and it's been OK. One thing I noticed was a problem with Firefox. I don't use it much, so I didn't open it the first time I got the computer started after the crash. Next time I...

MacBook Pro 13 inch Mid 2012 2.5GHz i5 8GB Memory OSX 10.9.2 Failed to start up four times. Then started on next attempt. Screen started p with the grey apple. Then went grey and blank. Then the spinning clock appeared. Then it cycled endlessly plain grey screen and spinning clock, every...

    Safari has suddenly gone wrong.

Well, I think I've found it. Somehow Java Script got turned off. Don't know how. Wasn't me. And no one else has used the laptop... Hmmm.

    Safari has suddenly gone wrong.

MacBook Pro 2013 OS 10.9.2 Safari 7.0.3 It was working last night. Shutdown overnight and started again an hour ago. I can view websites like this, but I seem to have lost stuff linked with images. Photobucket appears, I can log in and see the skeleton of the page but no images. I can...

    Starry Wallpapers for iMac

Open it in Preview. Crop it in proportion and then expand it to the size you want.

Mail goes to iPad, not to iMac.

I had something similar go wrong with ours. Soon afterwards the iMac mailbox went blank and I had to do a rebuild. Maybe a rebuild at this stage would cure it?

Is there a reliable external BluRay/DVD/CD reader/writer about?

Thanks! I can't find a source for the slim BluRay reader in the UK, but as I'm looking for a Newer Tech HD t the moment, there are the two items below. Although, once again, we are victims of the £1 = $1 sales conversion that is common over here. :(...

Is there a reliable external BluRay/DVD/CD reader/writer about?

The saga of my 2010 iMac continues. The black screen issue seems to have been cured by a new screen, but now the superdrive is not consistently recognising inserted discs. I've tried a clean, but the problem persists. If I decide to buy a newer iMac, I will need an external disc drive...

    Hard Drive not on desktop

I have an external dive (Firewire800) that disappears from the desktop. I haven't checked the System Profiler, but it appears immediately if I switch it off and opn at the mains. It appears to be "self ejecting"; there is no complaint from the system about not properly ejecting the disc.

Recommend a good, reliable Hard Drive.

That looks interesting. I'll investigate. Thanks :)

Recommend a good, reliable Hard Drive.

Ah! No! The WD drives at Apple are Thunderbolt only. My iMac is too old for Thunderbolt. :( The only Firewire 800 drives in the UK Apple Store are G-Tech. Lets have a look at other suppliers.

Recommend a good, reliable Hard Drive.

I'm UK based. I have my Time Machine on a G-Tech 1TB external hard disc attached to the iMac by a Firewire 800 lead. It's been working for a long time with no problems. As the 1TB has been good, I decided to get a G-Tech 2TB drive which is chained to the 1TB disc for some one-off backups...
