that is correct... there are utilities that let you access the iPod's music from other computers but they are from third parties (look in versiontracker.com) That feature is apple's nod to RIAA.

some apps will add things to the menubar when you launch them (like weatherpop). These icons can only be removed by quiting the app (usually there is a quit selection in the app's menu). True menulings (which apple reserved only for itself in 10.2) should be stored in the Menu Extras folder...

If that camcorder in the link is your camcorder, then it is digital and you should definitely be able to connect it to your mac using the included firewire cable. The port on the camcorder is not the same as the port in the mac, but it should come with a cable that works (my sony did)
