What Is "whois" ... "ping" ... "pong"?

Whois determines who is the owner of a domain name or IP address. Ping sends a short message over the network which gets returned by the target. It is usually used to show the amount of time it takes for a ping request to go through, but a lot of times people use it to simply see if they have...

    XML and Flash

I think for its purposes flash is totally unnecessary. If you plan on adding images and info then MAYBE I would consider doing something with JavaScript. I think at this point you are better off putting internal anchors for each letter at the top of the page.

    Wiki

I did a search... didn't find anything so I _hope_ this hasn't been posted already. Wikis seem to be the cool thing these days. I was thinking it would be a good idea to set one up on this site for common problems instead of the stickies and having people posting questions in the how to...

I swung by the onmac site today. They have a great deal of information available for running windows on your mac. The wiki is excellent.

Backup thru Samba share - dangerous?

I don't think it should be a problem, but you should compress/archive the backups to preserve the file system better. .dmgs are nice for backups.

    Proccessors

It is for this very reason that AMD had to keep up their odd numbering scheme for their XP and 64 lines of CPU. Their actual clock speed was always less than the number that was given to the CPU. For example, my XP 1800+ was only 1.53 GHz, but it would compete with about a P4 1.8 GHz, same with...

    Windows Support...

They actually have it working on every Mactel except the 20 inch iMac. Good video drives are not yet available. Which actually surprises me. I assumed that because the new Macs are more or less PCs that the video cards would be identical to any other ATI or nVidia card. I mean the chip-sets are...

So now that you can run Windows natively on Apple hardware are we going to have to start helping people with Windows issues? Just food for though :-P

    I bought a Mighty Mouse

This thought had crossed my mind. However, I spend a lot time in font of the computer, i mean a lot. Some days it's like 8 hours at work then another 8 when I get home. Last Friday after working a full day (7:30 - 4:30) I stayed up till around 3:00 working on something at home. I don't plan on...

    I bought a Mighty Mouse

I've had my MM for a while, I honestly don't remember the last time I used it. It's not a terrible mouse, but it doesn't compare at all to my Logitech MX518. However, I just took huge plunge on another interesting input device after reading the ars review. It costs a lot. Too much even...

Replace Dreamweaver? I need a good HTML editor.

I guess I still don't understand... what makes BBEdit so special? I mean 199 dollars for a text editor special? I've used 7, maybe things have changed but I didn't think it was THAT special.

Replace Dreamweaver? I need a good HTML editor.

I've been using eclipse with webtools for Servlet/JSP stuff but it has some nice HTML functionality too. There are tons of plugins for eclipse that will extend it and allow it to help you better. IMO the built in browser kinda sucks, but who browses websites with the preview pane anyways? You...

    Microsoft's portable device

Hmmm. Depending on hardware specs I would possibly be very interested. (Blasphemy they all say) Currently I have a PC laptop. It is a heck of a lot lighter and faster than my iBook. It also has a way wayyy nicer screen than the current iBook line (Maybe this will change... please?!) I got it...

    Teehee! MiniPC

From the anand article it sounded like it ended up costing quite a bit more once you built the thing compared to a Mini. Sorry for the repost. I hadn't seen this one posted before, I do remember the Intel one that came out right after the Mini... but it didn't look as much like the mini as this...

    Office 2004 performance on G5

I'm here at an Apple store trying out a MacBook. I have to say, even though word is running on rosetta it seems a lot quicker than Word on my G5. It doesn't seem to really matter what I am doing, things just take longer. For example, indenting with a bulleted list is painful as hell. It seems...

    Teehee! MiniPC

I did a few quick searches so I hope this isn't a repost. anandtech has a review of an AOpen MiniPC which is basically a clone of a Mac Mini. I'm not joking. The funny part is I don't think this guy realized that the new Mini's were out because he was comparing it to the PPC Mini, at least in...
