    Google to slowly replace .mac?

I don't use .mac, but if I didn't care about the cost, would use it over a Google app any day. Why? Because I don't want to see advertising intruding on what I consider to be my own private space. And no matter how tasteful and discreet, I don't want anyone on my list of personal contacts to...

    White iBooks

Here are some relatively inexpensive products available that can restore a high gloss and maybe even treat discoloration (though they will not cover up deep scratches). Rotten Stone is a fine mineral powder that makes a superb polish when moistened. It can be applied with a paper towel or...

    Older pink iMac

If your friend's iMac has turned pink, something is very, very, wrong. But the clicking sounds really do suggest a failing HD. On a bright note, replacing the original HD with a new one can really speed up system performance!

Any hard drive limit on an iMac G3?

You mean the oldest, tray-loading iMacs.

    Application Switcher Query

Dunno how to reduce the size of the Application switcher, but I'm guessing that if your wrists are hurting from dragging the mouse, you might not have the tracking speed set fast enough. Go to System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Mouse to adjust. You might also consider using a trackball instead.

This is some of my family in the old country. The photo fell out of the frame so into the scanner it went.

    Finder Crashes regularly

Bobw had a fix for the problem in this thread, but it looks like the link for the plug-in is not working right now. Think you might have to email smithmicro to get the patch. I recently had to reinstall Tiger and my Stuffit CM plugin was gone after that.

    Setting Sound Input Preferences

Sorry I can't help, but if it's any consolation, I have the same problem with Gizmo. My iMac has a built-in mic, but I plug in a Plantronics USB headset whenever I need to make a call. Gizmo allows the user to set input volume in Preferences, but the longer I am away the lower the setting...

    Installing OS 10.3

Not a problem, the CD set will work fine. Apple just doesn't offer it retail, and makes you buy the DVDs first and then exchange them for the CDs by mail. Kinda crazy but I guess Apple has its reasons.

    Installing OS 10.3

That's what I had thought. Hmm, Apple states that Tiger support is limited to those Macs with built-in FW, and on the same page they list the slot-loading iMacs among those supported, without any qualification. Oh well, fortunately cheekymac's Indigo iMac does have FW, so he is...

    Installing OS 10.3

You're quite welcome. BTW, here is a list of Tiger supported Macs. Your iMac is down at the bottom there. Apparently all the slot-loading models qualify, so I guess maybe they all do have FW. Good luck and have fun! :)

    F-key reprogramming

There are two relatively easy but iffy ways you could attempt this that I know of: Go to System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts, and add that command under All Applications. Failing that, FunKeys X allows you to map Function and other keys. It is Shareware though, about...

    IceKey Not NiceKey

Actually I really love my new Macally iceKey USB Slim Keyboard (Black), but it does have one little annoying foible. Out of 108 keys, there are four dedicated to Volume and Eject. Upon startup, these dedicated keys work fine, but some time later they will stop responding-- no action, no...

    New Get a Mac Ad

I have that box checked and I still get the warning. My favorite ads are the Angel/Devil and Sabotage. Ha ha ha.

    New Get a Mac Ad

Amusing but kind of over the top. The more viciously they bash MS, the more desperate Apple seems. And why is it that anytime you download a file in Tiger you get a stupid dialog box warning This file might contain an application, do you want to continue? Either I know it is an application...

    Installing OS 10.3

Tiger purportedly supports any G3 with built-in FireWire. There would be a port for it along side the USB and Ethernet, etc. Also from the Apple Menu, click on About This Mac and then More Info. There you can find all the specs on that machine. If it is a FW model, you should be able to...

    Installing OS 10.3

Well there were a few iMacs that came in Indigo, I think the first one did not have Firewire but the other models did? None would have USB 2. Gee, can you even sync an iPod over USB 1.1? Yes, you can remove the HD from an iMac G3 pretty easily. You could then put it in an enclosure (or...

    Installing OS 10.3

I see you wanted to upgrade so you could sync your Nano. So then you have Firewire and USB 2 on your Mac? If so you can readily install Tiger on that machine, there is no reason to use Panther, unless you got it dirt cheap. But you can probably find Tiger marked down somewhere too by now...

    Installing OS 10.3

So on what machine are you attempting this installation? Is it an iMac G3, and is that why you chose Panther over Tiger? If that is the case, the problem is probably with your CD player. If you remove the HD and put it into an external FW enclosure, you can install to it from any working Mac...
