    Login Items-Crash When Removing

I can't recall whether this boots your computer or logs in to your user account without launching login items, but try restarting and / or logging in while holding down the SHIFT key. This should disable login items if I remember correctly – which should allow you to delete them through the...

WD External Hard Drive won't mount

If you are "Lucky" the data is still good. It will still cost you to get the disc platters pulled and placed into a new drive though. Hope you had backups.

Snow Leopard restarted while running Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop CS2 is actually not very compatible with Leopard OR Snow Leopard, in my experience. In fact, much of Adobe Creative Suite 2 does not run well on standard 10.5.x Leopard. However, PS CS2 is listed as running with some bugs under Rosetta Mode only at the Snow Leopard...

Strange Folder labelled virusmails in private/var/

Whoops! Should have googled the User ID on those permissions. Look like they are from a previous install of ClamAV, using the amavisd component for checking for viri in emails.

Strange Folder labelled virusmails in private/var/

I was poking around in my computer the other day, and noticed a folder which gave me a bit of concern. Located in private/var/ is a folder named virusmails, which also had some unrecognized permissions. Does anyone have an educated opinion on this? (See attached screenshots)

    G4 Desktop

If there isn't much OTHER stuff on the desktop, try selecting all (except for your HD icon), and move it all to the trash with the Command+Delete key combo – DO NOT EMPTY THE TRASH! Now, open the trash and sort by kind. This should allow you to see all the NON-music files grouped together...

    Imac G4 having Kernel Panic

From the crash report it looks like a USB problem in the keyboard (the USBHub reference). Try unplugging everything from the computer except the keyboard and mouse and make sure they are both connected directly to the computer, rather than the mouse through the keyboard. If the problem persists...

    G5 (2004) Installed ATI 9200 128mb AGB

... but was it a Mac video card you upgraded to? Also, you may need BOTH cards installed to run two monitors if they do not explicitly support driving multiple monitors.

What does a Sudden Motion Detector Do?

... (which I believe is separate to the hard drive), are built ONLY into the Apple Laptops, and detect rapid changes in acceleration, such as if you were to drop your computer. It attempts to park the heads (retracting them) of any installed hard drives before they can damage the disc on impact.

    vcd/wmv to iDVD

If you want to MAKE a DVD video disc, It all comes down to how iDVD reads your source content. Most of your VCDs and AVI's will use one of a few codecs, probably some version of DivX, while your wmv's are using some version of Windows Media Video. Out of the box, Quicktime (which iDVD uses to...

    Difficulties Uploading Files From MAC

If it uses an Active-X control, there is no way around it, short of running Windows in Virtualisation.

How can I make my Apple Mail only download unread emails?

The trade off is that you will NOT be able to access these messages from any other machine, as the only copy will be on you work machine. If you are looking for read/unread syncing between your Work machine and your home machine, you want to use either MobileMe Syncing, or IMAP (email stored...

    webbrowsing crash with flash

You need to run the flash uninstaller before installing or updating ANY version of the Flash player/plugin, as Adobe's installation method leaves garbage in the system that messes stuff up if you do not. Grab it from: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html Then run your flash...

    OS X v10.5.6 + G4 1.25GHz + FCP Studio 2

This machine, if stuffed with as much RAM as it can fit, plus some faster hard disks, an the appropriate OS etc, may well be able to install and launch FCP, but it's going to run it like an absolute DOG. You may be able to edit Standard Def content, albeit slowly, and your renders will take a...

    Shared Folders forgets

I have also had this occurring on my external drive. I find it intermittently remembers and forgets that a folder within it is supposed to be shared. I wonder if it is something to do with it not being a boot volume. Wish I could be more help.

Most painless way to convert back to GUID partition?

Easiest solution would be to get a external hard disk, and partition and format it correctly with GUID and HFS+ journalled. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to do a full clone to it. Then boot from this to test it. Now, while booted from it, fire up Disk Utility and...

Mac Mini plays 1080p HD fine... except from CBS.com

... which is a dog on Mac OSX compared to Windows – blame Adobe for that. Playing 1080p content encoded for Quicktime will be MUCH smoother than the same using using Flash.

    IMac freezing during video games

If your Mac came with a hardware test CD, you can boot from that and run tests on your graphics card, among many other things. It could be hardware, or it could be corrupted graphics system drivers (from that original crash). Try downloading and installing the 10.5.7 Combo Update over your...

Lagging/Failing file transfers to Windows share

At work (24" Aluminium iMacs running 10.5.7) I'm finding that copying files to a Windows Vista shared drive (secondary hard disk in one of the PCs), is getting flaky after a little while, with console entries listing the Finder as experiencing an Allocator race condition (See attached pic). The...

    Watching HD content on Internet

I have an ancient 1.42GHz PPC G4 Mac Mini much like yours, and the sad truth is that these old computers simply don't have enough horsepower to decode HD content smoothly in software (ie: through a flash based video stream). Even playing local HD content is anything but smooth. Aside from buying...
