Unable to trash empty folders by any means

Had to enable root, mount my user's sparseimage, them delete the problem files off my desktop as root. No idea why sudo wouldn't recognize either an Admin OR a root password as well.

Unable to trash empty folders by any means

I have stumbled on an old issue that I solved once before on a work machine but cannot recall how I fixed it. I have a set of nested folders that simply cannot be removed. Not with force empty trash, not with the same feature in Onyx, and trying to do sudo results in "wrong password" - even...

    Using a Dell 1815dn multi-func as a scan

Sounds like you've got what you need at the Mac end, but I suspect you'll need the machine hosting the printer to be configured correctly (if it isn't already). Note that often Mac versions of software that is primarily written for PC's often end up as poor cousins, lacking features. I wouldn't...

Upgrading a G4 Powermac for HD video

Neither of your proposed solutions are likely to help much, as your issues using one of these older machines probably have more to do with internal bandwidth and/or drive access and available space. Working with High Definition footage needs a LOT of drive space, preferably on a dedicated drive...

    watching video = 100% CPU

Don't be alarmed. Unfortunately the extra processor usage you are noticing is due to the Mac version of the Adobe Flash web plug-in being very CPU hungry. I can only assume it has not been thoroughly optimized. Every Mac I have ever used has experienced this when viewing YouTube vids, and in...

Change the Mac OS X.4 theme

I have used Shapeshifter for years, and it has been a good little interface changing app. However, it can be a bit of a resource hog if you don't have much RAM (I only have 512Mb on my Mac Mini). After a while I found a nice white theme called Iridium that can be installed without Shapeshifter...

    Yahoo Messenger

Fie transfer from Mac to PC has always worked. From time to time it worked sporadically the other way. Yahoo messenger has been updated recently, so it shouldn't currently be an issue. Check for the latest version. If it is still an issue, try a freeware alternative such as Adium for Instant...

Automator Action - Copying to 7xUSB

I am trying to construct an automator action to efficiently copy a 15Mb folder containing 9 items to 7 512Mb USB memory sticks connected to a powered 7-port USB2 hub. I have 950 of these memory sticks to do this to (yes, it's for work). Copying the files to a single USB memory stick takes...

    DVD burn issues

When you are burning the disc, make sure that the option to Finalize the disc (or close the session) is checked. Some DVD drives on Mac and PC will read discs that have not had their sessions closed, but many will not.

Automator action - Copying Files to multiple USB Memory sticks?

We've discovered that manually copying the folder containing the files to each of the mounted USB Memory sticks on the desktop results in concurrent copies as you would expect, taking about 1 minute 30 seconds (including some overhead for USB bandwidth). So obviously something is going wrong...

Unable to access Software Update/iTunes Store

Sounds like the required ports are blocked by a firewall somewhere in your network, so that Software update and iTunes are not able to communicate with the sites (though I thought that iTunes would be over http.

G5 Tower: Menu selection & typing delay

Sounds like it's something OS level. My initial suggestions would proceed as follows to try and track down the problem: 1. Run disc utility and repair permissions. 2. Download Onyx http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/onyx.html and use it to clear your font caches and maybe even completely...

    Maya on MacBook

You're actually running with about the bare minimum for OSX itself to run nicely with one or two apps. Maya LOVES RAM, so if you are serious about using it, I'd recommend you shove as much RAM into it as you can afford. Your processor should hum along fine. Maya is lovely software.

    Accedently Deleted!

There is a little app available through Macupdate.com called Pacifist, which enables you to extract individual files and applications from your install CD's. Read the instructions, and it's as easy as pie.

Inverted Images when dropped into IWEB or Mail??

Check that your images are RGB, not CMYK. Many web and email apps (especially MS Outlook), can't display CMYK colour properly. Plus your should be using RGB for the web.

    SATA in Quicksilver G4 Problem

Hi. You've hit the nail on the head. The power supplies in Apple's towers – certainly in the Quicksilver and earlier days – were all custom parts that supplied pretty much the exact amount of power the Apple spec'ed machine required (give and take some). Your Serial ATA drive is going to need...

Modify a Quicksilver to use two optical drives.

I have a 733MHz Quicksilver too. I know that there's physically enough space to locate a second optical drive above the first where my internal ZIP drive is located, but I am unsure if the mount points are suitably aligned. You would also have to make sure the second optical drive was also in...

CD-R What formats can I read?

Sadly there are a few derivative CD-ROM disc formats (for the PC) that Mac OSX doesn't natively support, though it is unusual to encounter them. Oddly, OS9 COULD read the few that OSX cannot. This may be one of those cases (though it could be an incompleted disc session burn).

Place multiple files as one IDD story

Indesign supports importing Word files with or without formating. Just use the PLACE command, as you would with any other imported file. You can even retain a link to the word file, in case you want to edit it in word and have it update in Indesign. You can also keep importing multiple word...
