Sounds like a hardware problem. You could try setting your recording speed lower. If that doesn't help and you're sure your files are okay it's probably worth reporting to Apple.

You do not use Tinker Tool, do you ? If not, it's probably a problem with the Finder. An upgrade should fix that issue because it installs a new version of the Finder... BTW, Jaguar is quite nice and well worth the upgrade IMHO. (Make sure you get an edu version, of course ;-)

With the introduction of MacOS X all (rather: much) is about privileges. Often things don't work beause of privilege violations. Go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. There go to "Repair Privileges". I know, it's a wild guess but it might help.

I can but agree with egil. I had a lot of problems after upgrading. Everything was very slow also. A clean install solved all my problems and the beast is running very fast even on my old G4/400 PCI... Any haxie or similar can cause problems. Norton is notorious for giving trouble etc. etc...

Well, the only system addition that might cause Word problems (not: Entourage runs fine) is cocoAspell. Apple Works runs fine... I had cocoAspell installed before tho' and it worked fine. Anybody else having an issue with Word ?

Defragmentation can be done with Norton Utilities or Drive 10 in MacOSX. That is, if the partition is HFS+ formatted. On UFS formatted disks no defragmentation is neccessary, as far as I know (it handles data differently). Be aware though, that you need a HFS+ partition to run Classic (MacOS 9)...
