I am running a dual G5 with panther and trying to use VLC. and i am having an issue with the sound - NO SOUND. Does any one know how can i get the sound working? I would use the DVD player but while playing dvd's i get green noise across the screen.

I have not yet tried any of your suggestions but when using VLC insted of the Apple dvd player everything works fine. Strange huh? Maybe it's not bad video ram, perhaps it's just the apple DVD app.
