    Which Apps Use Java?

Is there a way, hopefully easy, to discover if an application is written in Java?

    Deleting Photos

And if that's counterintuitive, the next episode is even more counterintuitive - to me. After deleting all those photos, I noticed that my storage used had not reduced any! After more surfing, I found out why. The photos weren't really gone, just moved to an album named Recently Deleted...

    Deleting Photos

This has been a frustrating experience. I was traveling for a month last Fall and took thousands of photos. I loaded them on my iPad3 by reading the camera chips with my handy camera kit adapter. So far, so good. When I got home, I pulled everything into iPhoto. Still OK. Then, because I...

    Handoff Advertising?

Found it myself. Go to Preferences / General and uncheck "allow handoff". Geez, if I can kill of a few more, my Yosemite system might actually be usable.

    Handoff Advertising?

My console is receiving a lot of entries like 12/26/14 2:13:55.713 PM sharingd[374]: 14:13:55.713 : Stopping Handoff advertising I think I know what handoff is. I'm not interested. How can I turn it off?

    Yosemite Running Slow

Earlier this week, my "mid 2011" system (see signature) was very slow and actually froze up twice. A colleague looked at the console and noticed quite a few of these nasty items: Dec 15 21:41:56 server kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error. Tuesday morning, it went totally belly-up. I am now booted...

    Yosemite & Startup Items

Before my system went toes up with hardware failure, I ran EtreCheck. Its report included this gem: Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite. Does this mean I can trash the folder /Library/StartupItems? There are 7 items whose names indicate old apps that I haven't used in years.

    Yosemite Running Slow

Open Activity Monitor, click the "% CPU" tab, and look for hog processes. You might have to click the tab twice to order the highest on top. Also, what iMac do you have, how much RAM, disk, ...? I have never heard of LionSpeedMac - neither has Google.

Screen Saver Freezes Attempting To Disengage.

Forget about it. The simplest answer is usually right. My internal disk failed completely this morning. I'm working from a SuperDuper clone until my new iMac arrives Thursday. Merry Christmas to me!

Screen Saver Freezes Attempting To Disengage.

Please post a link. I also searched but didn't find anything very apt. OK, I did the 1st. Where in the App Store do I find something to uncheck? Yesterday afternoon, I quit both Pages and Numbers. This morning my system was running fine. Today I'll leave only Pages running and see what...

Screen Saver Freezes Attempting To Disengage.

I updated to 10.10 a couple of weeks ago - then to 10.10.1. It was mostly OK except for one major gripe I'll mention later. Right now ... I leave my iMac running overnight with the screensaver set to random and displaying the time floating around. When I got back in the morning, both...

    Official Yosmite Thread! :)

My biggest gripe (so far) is how long it takes for a running program to wake up after sitting inactive, say, overnight. For example, I have a Numbers spreadsheet that I update every day, first thing in the morning. When I'm done, I hide it. Now, in the morning, the document reappears...

What Should I Do With Private And Opt Folders?

Yes, the whole thing. On your desktop, single-click the system disk icon, then right-click and select "Get Info". In the display, the "General" section, find the number labelled "Used:" and multiply by 1.5, just to make sure you have plenty of room. By the way, after the first backup...

What Is The Current Favourite Web Authoring Software?

If the "iWeb originals" are HTML, anything should be able to read them. I use Freeway Pro and have successfully dropped in HTML from elsewhere. That said, more often than not I rewrite the pages to use the facilities of the editor I paid for. It's $150. The lite version is free, but I don't...

What Should I Do With Private And Opt Folders?

Do you know my wife? I keep nagging her to let me upgrade her iMac from 10.6.8, but she always has an excuse to delay. I upgraded mine step-by-step from Snow Leopard to Yosemite and had zero problems. That's no guarantee ... More advice ... Get yourself the app SuperDuper! ($27.95) and an...

What Should I Do With Private And Opt Folders?

That folder is not usually visible in the Finder. Open the Terminal app in Utilities and type this and hit return: cd / You are now positioned at the top level of your file system. Now type: ls This will list everything there. Do you see something named private or private/? You should...

What Should I Do With Private And Opt Folders?

The folder /private is supposed to live at the top level of your system disk. It contains the folders etc/, tmp/, tftpboot/, and var/. There are top level symbolic links to these, except for tftpboot/. If it is no longer where it's supposed to be, your system is in a very strange state. I...

Is There A "name" Service For Texting?

Sometimes I get invited to text a message to 123456. How does my phone / phone service know the real destination? I understand using an email address composed of the 10 digit phone number @ server domain.
