I doubt that changing the font family will help, however I have Firefox set to allow pages to set their own fonts. The default sans serif font I have is Helvetica. On that page, I changed my character encoding to Western (ISO-8859-1), and the strange character disappeared.

Pull down the View menu and change the text encoding. Using Unicode will likely fix the problem. If the browser is already set to use Unicode, change to Western.

What are you trying to do with the .jar file? Are you trying to edit files in it? If so, you can open that file with Zipeg, drag the files out and drop them into a directory, edit them if necessary, then drop them back into the archive in the same place where you got them (the same subdirectory).

Is this disk from Sony, by any chance? If it is, I hope you opened it using Mac OS, not Windows. Some Sony CDs had rootkit installers on them.

Zipeg is an application that can open .jar files. It is free. You can extract files from the archive and examine them, edit them, and then put them back in and save the archive.

Perhaps just reinstalling the last combo update to Mac OS 10.4.11 would fix it. If not, you probably will need to install the whole operating system from disk all over again.
