How is VNC launched on the remote box? Sounds like it may be tied in with your login, and thus doesn't run once you log out.

I've never heard of anything like this before, but try creating a new user, and logging in as that user, and pringing from there. Sometimes a file will get messed up that is specific to the user (such as a preference file), and this is the way to tell. Let us know what happens.

I have two ideas for you: 1) The line output connector likely disables the internal speaker when you hook it up, and maybe the software is aware of this, and re-names 'Internal' to 'Line Out' only if something is connected. So try that - connect something in, and see if it becomes an option...
