DO NOT stuff in applications folder

yeah, I did the same thing with PB. it sucked because I would try to use the shortcuts from the applications menu 'Sherlock' or 'system prefs' and it would not be able to find them. My solution now is to just let OS X put them where it wants and I will create a separate 'appsAlias' directory...

no backlight on powerbook when waking from sleep

I hook my powerbook up to a monitor at work, and before OS X final, I could not switch back to the built-in display without shutting down. Yesterday I was excited to find the ability there to switch back and forth, so at the end of the day I put the 'book to sleep to take home. However, when...

connecting to webdav server crashes osx

I did it twice (stupid me...) - i have a server on which I enabled webdav. I can connect to it fine on my win95 machine, but when I tried it with OSX it choked. I opened "Connect To Server" and chose 'web server', then entered the web address "http://servername/dav" which is the location of...

    Gimp for macos x

http://www.macgimp.com/ The download is not an OSX native application unfortunately. It needs tenon's X tools to run as an X windows app. you will also have to compile it. I suggest photoline for now. Gimp is a great app, but I would wait for a native OS X version. If you are bound...

    Staroffice for Mac OS X

personally I prefer vi.... but thats not the point, sometimes we have to open/edit/save *.doc files and it would be nice to do that on OS X without having to spend $400 for M$ Office!!

    photoline

Just found an image editing program called PhotoLine for OS X (carbon). Any one else heard of or used it? It has a similar interface to photoshop, but with a $60 price tag and a functioning demo that will actually let you save your work.

    Terminal commands

here is another way to use the 'man' tool: you can find all the commands, or binaries in these directories: /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin do "ls /bin" or any of those and you will see all the commands available, now to find out what they do, type "man command" some will not have manual...

    web serving (apache and php)

ok, so this is a little plug for my page. I thought it would fit in here since it uses what we have been discussing in this thread. It is a freely downloadable php/apache web page template that has discussion forums, articles, and article connection to the discussions. Most of the work for...

    S...S...Soundj...jjjam skk....ips

I noticed something with SJ and the built-in player: I keep my cpu monitor running (the expanded version), when SJ is in the background, it seems to take a lot less juice. When in the foreground, it appears to be sucking all the cpu. Here is the weird part: when SJ is paused, cpu usage drops...

    S...S...Soundj...jjjam skk....ips

well, I don't know why it skips but it is quite annoying. For the most part it plays fine - but once every 5 or 10 minutes it just hangs, that is a better word for it. It hangs for a few (long) seconds then resumes. I am running this on a 266 Wallstreet, I would not be surprised if it ran...

another thread complaining about the finder

when I choose 'Save-As' or 'Save' and get the little box where I am supposed to tell the document where to find a home, I expect the pull-down menu to be a path to the current directory (yeah, like the old mac OS...). Instead, it is a list of "favorites", and "recent places..." I know I can...

    S...S...Soundj...jjjam skk....ips

I just downloaded the new soundjam for osX and it plays pretty well for a while then skips... not just a little 'sk.ip' but a 'sk...............................ip'. So I made it load songs into memory and gave it 10 MB to work with and it still does it. This is disturbing. I am going back...

Anyone got PHP to work yet?

I think if you do the DSO installation, it does not require a recompile - just restart apache, but otherwise it does. I could not do the DSO install on mine, did not have a necessary module for it (mod_so.c).

Anyone got PHP to work yet?

try textEdit, or some other plain text editor. no telling what microsoft adds to their 'text' files... also, the name of the file must be 'apache.conf' if the extension gets changed by the editor it will not work... such as, "apache.conf.txt" or something like that will not be recognized.
