    lies lies and lies

Finally I got the OS X 10.1 and OS 9.2 CDs today. I already had 10.1 installed, so today I wanted to install or update, rather, 9.1 to 9.2. Before the update whenever I open a classic app it said I should consider upgrading, and all I had to do was put in the cd and click on the update...

    unwanted user at login

Hmm, good to know. But what happens to my mysql user now? I haven't checked, but I am sure that if you are right, its uid is above 500. Can I use NetInfo to just change that uid? Or is it too late because the system has files that register mysql as user of the current uid? Thanks! G

    unwanted user at login

Thanks. That worked. But do you know how to deal with the second question? The user mysql is created by me but I want it not be shown as part of the list of users that can log in, just as "root" and "nobody" are valid users on the unix system but they don't appear on the list of users that...

    unwanted user at login

Hi, On version 10.1, at login, you see actually all the users you've set up as an administrator, including yourself. Two problems: 1. What if I want to log in as a user not created by me but by the system such as root? 2. What if I don't want to show one of the users I set up. For example...

    Driver for IOMega CD Burner?

Hi, I downloaded toaster for tibook and my ZipCD burner burns fine based on preliminary burning test. Well, I never bought anything from eBay, but it seems like that was a lemon. Thank you everyone for the help. Now I have a burner and a printer for my tibook. What more could I ask for...

    invoking programs from command line

Wow, that script worked. I used it in my forte as the script to call for viewing jsp and html files, and it worked too. Such smarties on this forum :-) Thanks! G PS: wonder if apple script can open a new IE window :-) OK, asking for too much now.

    invoking programs from command line

Well, you are saying that if you type open blah on someone's mac, you will have that "blah" opened on that someone's mac? How can that be? What if that mac has no one logged in? Or not the same person as you? Or do you mean like X Windows where you borrow someone else's resources to invoke...

    Driver for IOMega CD Burner?

Hi, This toast beta you have requires the classic toaster for mac? Or can I install it without toaster for classic? Thanks, G

    invoking programs from command line

It seems to work. But using an argument would not work because $1 is translated literally: open /Applications/Internet\ Explorer.app/ ; osascript -e 'tell application "Internet Explorer" to OpenURL "$1"' > /dev/null This is placed in a file ie.sh, and I wanted to do something like...

    Driver for IOMega CD Burner?

Well, using the ZipCD burner on Win98 and Win2000 I never had a problem. OK, sometimes it freezes the whole system, but that is a rare case. It's slow, but it was one of the first USB burners available for mac and win. Maybe you should buy a new CD burner? I saw a special for $179.99. was...

OS X 10.1 adds Chinese and other languages, but....

Ah, so you are using an OSX that is made for Taiwanese interface. I see. Well, don't feel bad about not using 10.1; I think someone is trying to get it on an ftp server for downloading by OS X users on this website. I wish I could contribute, but I don't know how to turn the CD into some ISO...

    Java in IE

Hi, Does anyone know if IE for OS X.1 is working ok? I haven't visited too many websites with java applets, but when I went to news.bbc.co.uk, the little news ticker only writes one line (not normal in light of the fact that IE for Windows shows an applet that writes the rest of the sentence)...

    Driver for IOMega CD Burner?

OK, I will try to burn some music with iTune on this wonderfully bulky burner. But as for Toaster, are you talking about the 30-day trial update to classic Toaster? Are there no freebies out there? Is it so hard for developers to port classic apps to osx apps that there's a hefty charge for...

OS X 10.1 adds Chinese and other languages, but....

No, when I start typing pinyin, nothing happens, like when I type "ni hao" for hi. I found this site for installing Chinese in OS X, but strangely its steps are illustrated by OS 9! So I am researching further. Thanks everyone! G

OS X 10.1 adds Chinese and other languages, but....

Hi George, are you able to write in Chinese? I am ok with the English interface right now (I don't read Chinese that well anyway). But I would like to write in Chinese, and selecting either Taiwanese or Mainland keyboard settings did not allow me to type in Chinese. Did it allow you to...

    Driver for IOMega CD Burner?

OK, I will wait. In the meantime I will try to look around and see what's out there that can help me. G

OS X 10.1 adds Chinese and other languages, but....

Yeah, that's what I suspected too. There is no installed Chinese localized files as there are for Portuguese, Spanish, etc. I wonder if these files are downloadable in the future from Apple or if it is possible for developers to make and distribute them.... Thanks! G

    Driver for IOMega CD Burner?

Hi, How does it work with external cd burners on OS X? I have an IOMega CD USB burner. I use it with Windows 98 (doesn't work on Windows 2000, but I guess that's not important). I know it supports OS 9, or something. But how do I make it work on OS X? I know they have no support yet for...

OS X 10.1 adds Chinese and other languages, but....

Hi, After the quick update from the 10.1 update cd, I noticed that Chinese and other languages finally appeared on the internationalization option. But during the update I did not notice any localization files for these locales loaded. So perhaps because of that, by selecting Chinese and even...
