Check the disks that came with your iBook. The AHT might be a seperate disk. (mine was for iMac G4) I don't believe so, but doesn't hurt to look. ;)
If you can't boot from install cd (and cd is ok) it may be a hardware problem.
Were you able to boot in safe mode? You mentioned trying fsck...

If every other update is installing and working, it is very odd. I was thinking that the Software Update or Installer apllication might be corrupt. (which Pacifist could be used to get the applications off the Install cd without having to re-install the whole OS)

Yes, when you reformat a drive, it WILL erase everything on it. You need to back up the data before you start.
What Mac and OS are you using? Your beliefs for formatting may not be right.

Try to highlight the sent folder and use the rebuild command.
If that doesn't work, drag the messages ( the mail stamp icons from your library ) into a different folder. ( i.e. the messages folder in your drafts.mbox ) Go back to the mail application and use the rebuild command on the folder...
It's possible it could be just a corrupt preference file. Look for the systemconfigurations/networkinterfaces.plist in your home folder~ library/preferences/ and trash it.
The en0 is the prefix for a common Ethernet Network interface. ( which suggests it's probably working... )

They have a USB adapter you can look at. I bought one for an iMac G3 and it works just fine. It's also compatible with Leopard as well. I also saw a USB adapter at Bestbuy recently. ( forget who makes it though )

Go to your home folder~library/mail/pop-"yourname"/drafts.mbox/messages
You should find where your mail keeps the actual files. (also the inbox, outbox, etc...)
