Generally speaking, MySQL has been faster on Linux than on FreeBSD. However, you can get quite a speed improvement by compiling MySQL 4.x with Linux threads. Specifically, check out the WITH_LINUXTHREADS option for /usr/ports/databases/mysql40-server/. If you search Google, you should be able to...
No, no...vim w/syntax coloring _or_ nano w/syntax coloring. I tested BBedit, but I just can't justify the cost. SubEthaEdit is pretty good and it's free. Same thing with mi and jedit. I use nano most often though and vi whenI don't have nano.

There are several hosting companies that offer collocation services for reasonable $$$. You provide the server and they provide power, ethernet, and minimal support (typically for just the power/ethernet :) ).
Do I believe that aliens have visited Earth? Maybe...but not likely. Do I beileve that there are other living organisms in the universe? Of course there is. If Earth is the only planet with life, that's an sad waste of 'space'. :)

I have a 12" PB and I love it. I use it as my primary machine, but I don't do much video/audio editing. I do work with photographs a bit, but I don't use Photoshop...I use GraphicConverter and iPhoto as they have met my needs so far and they came with it. :) I do have quite a bit of experience...
I have the blessing (or curse) of using many different OS's all the time. I have a 12" PB G4 that I use as my primary personal computer. At work, my workstation is a P3 450 w/384M RAM running NT4.0. I maintain our FreeBSD and RedHat machines, but I also do work on NT4.0 and Win2k servers (and...
DSL? That's mildly amusing. :) macosx.com is hosted with DigitalCrowd (digitalcrowd.com). But wait, DigitalCrowd's founder is Scott William. Is that the same Scott that runs the board? 65.204.248.113 (macosx.com's IP) is owned by UUNet (Alter.Net/WorldCom) so they either host with someone that...
There are many, many solutions for getting a forum to "pay for itself" so to speak. None are perfect. Pro's and con's for each. Popups don't really cut it since many people will/can just block 'em resulting in no $$$ for the site. Large ads pay more than small ads. I have seen some sites go the...
Sure, ads are annoying, but something/someone has to pay the bills. So, if ads can keep me from being the one paying, I'm all for it. At least there's not popups. Are there? I wouldn't know since I block 'em. 8^)

Did weed a couple times in high school. Just experiments...enjoyed myself all but once. But, I can't really like putting chems into my body when un-needed so I haven't touched it since. I've never done anything else. I casually drink on occasion (couple times a year). I rarely get drunk.

Oh what a big list this would be... I'll shorten the list a bit. Here goes:
PREVIOUS MACHINES:
o Adam (from Toys R' Us)
o Commadore 64 w/1200 baud modem, 5.25" floppy, dot matrix printer, tape drive, 13" TV as monitor.
o 286 with something like 8M RAM, Win 3.1
o 486 DX4/100 w/16M...
I've heard a really great pair of speakers w/"ribbon drivers" once, but they were ~$10,000/pair. All the rest I've heard have been mediocre. IMHO, Klipsch makes very decent computer speakers. However, as others have mentioned, better sound may be heard by just plugging your iBook into your home...
Type "hostname" at the command prompt and it will return your hostname. "localhost" is internal...pointing to 127.0.0.1 on lo0 (loopback interface). Not sure where to set the hostname in OS X though...there should be a config file in /etc or wherever network settings are kept. My expertise is in...
