The Mac Pro is here... not so impressive?

I just expected a higher and more impressive jump, but yet I have to agree that they succeeded on creating a more powerful machine, which was not easy. However just remember that all those applications that are not Universal code will run much slowler than in G5 machines, so the full potential...

The Mac Pro is here... not so impressive?

I don't know if I've got the wrong feeling about this, but the new Mac Pro does not seem so impressive to me. According to Apple test results, the Mac Pro with the Quad Intel Xeon CPU running at 2,66 GHz performs 0,3 points better at the Cinebench test (just to give an example which is in my...

    Mail over proxy?

I had (and still have) the same problem. I found a command-line solution that is very uncomfortable and I wouldn't recommend. I can't believe Apple didn't offer a full Proxy support.

    Mail over proxy?

Uh, sorry but that is not correct. There's a method called HTTP tunneling that will allow you to access your POP3 mail when you are behind a proxy. Also, if the proxy is a SOCKS type, some (many) mail programs let you configure the proxy server to work with. I recommend using Entourage X...

    Virtual PC

I would recommend using Petit dosbox http://web.jet.es/guilly/slouc/, it is more complete than Radnor. Anyhow, I believe that you will need a veeeery fast computer to run NFS emulated.

    iChat voice & proxies

Sorry, you're right. I have OS X.3.6 (Panther). iChat does support proxy servers. At my work, it is a HTTP proxy server with port 8080. However, it seems that some services might not work thru this port, since text chat works fine. Anyhow, it is quite bizarre that this same thing happens with...

    iChat voice & proxies

Hi there :p I configured iChat at home and tried it with other mac, and all of its features (except for webcam, since I do not own an iSight) worked fine. I got to work where I have to configure a HTTP proxy server to get Internet, hence I configure iChat to do so and the program connects...

Configure a USB WLAN Adaptor under OS X?

Hello there. Does anyone know how to configure a USB WLAN Adaptor under OS X? (I believe these are standard). OS X does detect it and it appears under the Network preferences panel (under the weird name of "4 to 6"). However I've only got a couple of parameters and I can only fill one, which...

why the long wait for tiger?

The Iberian Lynx (actually, I think "Lynx" is a cool name for a UNIX based OS, unfortunately there's already a terminal based browser with that name)

    10.3.5 (Complete Thread)

Ehm... Apache gets security updates constantly. That would be an unfair bet. I propose antother bet: we will be loyal Mac users forever until Microsoft buys Apple and installs Windows under the Intel G6 chipsets. (Oh my... I think it is too early here in Spain. I'm...

    Gui development on OS X

As far as I remember, the last Apple Developer Tools XCode includes AppleScript Studio, which will help you designing AppleScript GUIs with ease. Take a look at http://www.apple.com/applescript/studio/ and its corresponding sublinks.

    10.4 Features!

I just get back to the point of this thread. Besides some very good points which arose throughout this thread, I would also like to add some possible new feature which would be enjoyable. Integrated X11 runtime environment - user friendly (console becomes optional) and a better approach of...

    A small size powerbook

As far as I can remember, someone already invented foldable screens. I could see it at an electronics fair at ... uhm... I think it was in Barcelona. Sorry, but I don't remember who the developer was. Afterall it was seen as a tech curiosity on TV. I think it is only a matter of time (and market...

    Tiger screens (Dashboard, more)

I run Panther on an iBook G3 600 and it run perfect (ok, it was not my PowerBook G4, but was still fairly good). All you need is good memory resources; mine had 640 MB. Overmore, Panther seemed to run even better than Jaguar.

    Non-Apple iDisk

Ô.o hehehe. Actually I own more than 20 GBs in a Hotline account. Unfortunately, I'm often between restrictive firewalls and which my Hotline can't trespass. I like the iDisk not only because I can mount it as a "real" drive, but also because it seems to be proxy independent. Anyhow, I'll...

    Non-Apple iDisk

Hello again. Undoubtly I'm Mr. Doubt in person. Jokes apart. I own a .Mac account and I find the iDisk to be one of the most useful tools in the .Mac services bundle (although it is veeery slow due to technical reasons I don't remember or I don't want to explain). However, 100 MB is quite...

How to format in MS-DOS format?

O.ô How couldn't I think of it before? Oh, well yes, because when I posted the question there was no PC around. Thank you for the idea because I thought I was still in the same situation. Now I have my PC here with me and I use Partition Magic which is a great program to mantain partitions.
