    Macosx.com Webmail down?

Hi all, I'm getting a database connection error when I go to webmail.macosx.com, and have been for a couple of days. Has the webmail address changed, or is something wrong with the webmail service?

PPC Mac - look to run either Deluge or uTorrent - is possible

BTW I believe there is a beta version of uTorrent for Mac OS X and the developers have every intention of putting a Mac version out very soon.

Wirelessly Stream MP3 To A Remote Stereo w/o attached Mac?

Another vote of confidence for Airport Express - they work brilliantly for streaming iTunes to another room. :-)

Secrecy at Apple is going to far

Yes, I can't help but notice that Apple have been making some big customer relations blunders lately. For a major app like iTunes to be released with such poor testing, and then with the patch to be released silently and without acknowledging an error, is poor form. For a new iPod Touch to be...

HP Touchsmart setting the bar for Apple?

In my work we have deployed *lots* of HP tablets and touchscreen computers. They are by no means new. And there is a reason why they haven't caught on yet - while they are faily convenient for some uses, they're pretty inconvenient and awkward to use for most general users. Its surprising how...

    Fire At Apple

I was thinking more of that episode where they have a fire in their kitchen, and Basil gets himself in the face with the extinguisher. "I mean, whats the point of having it, really? It sits there for years and years and when you actually need it, when you actually have a fire, it blows your head...

It was only a matter of time, I guess.

    something different from MAIL

I'd suggest trying out Mozilla ThunderBird. It is free, highly customisable and may be more suited to your own tastes. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

    Firefox Themes Hogging Battery Power

I'd be surprised if a theme would make any real difference on that front. Perhaps there is something else that you have changed that could be having an impact. It might be another software program or plugni you've loaded that is using resources to connect to the network. If you're on a wireless...

    Wifi: boon or bust?

I'd say entirely good. Of all the little tech problems I've had to deal with, wifi has never been an issue. I've only had to tweak it twice, once to allow BitTorrent to use port-forwarding, and once to allow my Nintendo DS to access the Internet (since the DS only supports a couple of...

    Viruses On Os X

I just thought I'd bring a couple of new Trojans to the attention of the MacOSX.com community. http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001461.html Backdoor.Mac.Hovdy.a apparently isn't in the wild yet, but the source code for it is circulating, meaning it is only a matter of time. Being a...

how to list information of a unmounted/corrupt device

Have you had a look in Hardware Profiler? (Go to Apple Menu -> About this Mac and click on "More info". You'll often be able to find devices listed even if they aren't formatted or readable.

    mac leopard/vs windows vista software

The Mac software you'd be interested in is Mac OS X (Leopard) and iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, iDVD). Their official sites are http://www.apple.com/macosx/ and http://www.apple.com/ilife/. For office software, you might also be looking at iWork, however Macs ship with only a trial...

    Coincidence?

It is hard to know without knowing at what point you've been compromised. If it was a vulnerability in VBulletin, or if your VBulletin password was insecure and was brute-force hacked, or had been picked up through being used at another site, then no, using a Mac would not have made a...

    Remote desktop to multiple Macs

That would work, provided you use port forwarding on the router and send requests to given port numbers from outside to the remote desktop port on each respoective Mac. What type of router does the office network use?

Mac Software that monitors modifications to a volume?

AppleScript's Folder Actions could be used in this way. It takes a little working out, but if you look through the Folder Actions examples and the email examples, you'll be set. http://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppleScript/Conceptual/AppleScriptLangGuide/reference/ASLR_folder_actions.html

    iMac remote control, iTunes, sound

I suspect that what Svenole actually wants to know is if it is possible to switch the sound output device (Computer, Lounge Room, Bedroom) using the Apple Remote. I don't know how this could be done with the Apple Remote, as I don't have one; perhaps someone here knows if the Apple Remote can...

    terminal build into desktop

You can install one of the unix window managers (such as Fluxbox, Gnome, KDE, Enlightenment, etc) by using Fink, and from there you can run xterm, gterm, kterm or various implementations of term or console that let you set a transparency. It is neither easy nor straightforward, but I have done...

    Wierd installer behavior.

You could select the installer package, and choose File --> Get info. Then, under "Open with" change it to the installer program. Then, click the option to use the setting for all files of that type. If you double click the installer package now, it should act as you expected.
