Why not use the builtin encryption like blowfish, much better than trying to create your own. Encryption which is a bit of a fine art if you want to do it right. Do a "man blowfish" or "man EVP_EncryptInit" to find out how to use it.

have you started x-darwin? If its starts properly you should see at least one terminal window. are you typing your commands in an x-window terminal or in terminal.app ? You can't start x-apps from terminal.app unless you configure it to do so.

you need to install a placeholder package for x11 if you have x-darwin installed. I think it's called "system-xfree86". ethereal works great for me. btw you might wanto try OroborOsx for a window manager so your x-windows look a little bit more "aqua".
