    Windows on a Mac

SLO4SHO - There is no real point in trying to install Windows on a PPC Mac, but if you wanted Mac recommendations for ripping / burning DVDs, all you really need is Toast. It's not free, but it is pretty complete - it will transcode and recompress DVD video (assuming its not encrypted), make...

    Passing Audio input to output

Thanks for the replies - I tried out LineIn with a microphone and seems to work great! Thanks! I'll wait to buy the iMic til I get a PS3, in case I can get away with just using the input on the MBP, but thank you! Can't wait to get the stuff and give it a try now :)

MBP battery drains in Boot Camp

Ok, I've just done some reading. It looks like this is normal behaviour - under very heavy CPU load, the system draws power from both the AC and battery: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332 I am guessing you wouldn't notice this in Mac because the system will reduce the CPU speed to stop it...

    Xvid, avi, etc Help!

Make sure you haven't got a clash between the Quicktime plugins. Go into Macintosh HD > Library > Quicktime and see what's in there. First, remove everything apart from Perian and see if it works. Then, add the components you need one at a time, checking to see if it works after each one until...

iBook G4 wont start up after software update

Ideally, you would use the Mac OS X install disc. If you don't have it, you could try using another Mac - boot the iBook into Target Disk Mode (hold T on startup), and connect it via firewire to another Mac. It will mount in the other Mac just as a normal hard disk. Now repair the disk /...

    Passing Audio input to output

Hi all, This is probably a silly question, but I was wandering if it was possible to pass audio from the line-in on a MacBook Pro directly to an audio output? I was thinking of buying a PS3 and connecting it to my external monitor, and thought I may be able to play sound through my...

MBP battery drains in Boot Camp

This is very strange... The computer should not be using the battery at all when running on AC power. I've run Vista on mine no problem without a battery in it, although mine is the 2.16GHz with ATI graphics. I'm not all that familiar with the advanced settings in Windows, but I can't imagine...

    Windows on a Mac

Yes, XP will run fine (or as good as does on any other PC anyway). BootCamp comes pre-installed on OS X, and is really easy to set up - you can even make Windows the default operating system (I think) by changing the startup disk in System Preferences.

X11 Window forwarding - Remote Gnome session?

Thanks for the replies! As Mikuro suggested, I tried gnome-panel, which is pretty much what I needed (sorry, I'm not all that familiar with Linux yet, but like what I have seen so far :)) The start and task bar seem to work great in X11, so thanks! And I can launch apps fine, so I'm sorted...

X11 Window forwarding - Remote Gnome session?

Hi nix, Thanks for the reply - I just tried logging in with SSH and launching gone-session all from xterm, but it still seems to be doing something weird with the displays. I'm thinking this may be a problem with the X11 settings...

X11 Window forwarding - Remote Gnome session?

Hello, My university currently allows me to connect to their Linux servers with SSH, and to use graphical applications with X11 window forwarding (using the -X option at SSH login). I was wandering if anyone knew how to start a remote Gnome session (not just the terminal in SSH, but using...

Problems with External VGA Display in Vista, MacBook Pro

Hi, I've had this problem for a while - I'm trying to use my TV as an external display for my MacBook Pro (ATI graphics) when running Windows Vista. It is connected using the Apple VGA adapter, into the VGA port on the back of the TV. Vista recognizes that there is an external monitor...

    Upgrading PowerMac G5 Superdrive

Hi Bob, Just installed my new superdrive - its a Pioneer DVR-111D. OS X recognises it, I can read DVDs, and I am able to boot the machine off my Tiger DVD using it. Haven't tried burning anything yet - just encoding a DVD video to try it out. Thanks a million for your help! Tom

    Network Media Players

Hi, Up until about a year ago, I was using an Elgato EyeHome to play back media off my computers throguh my TV using my Airport Extreme network. Then, I moved house, and there is something in the walls that is very badly affecting wireless network strength, so I could no longer get the...

    logic board question

Hi, Apart from actually seeing the crystals on the logic board, I don't think so. If its all working okay, then I really wouldn't start poking around in there. Even if you found some, you're probably more likely to damage it cleaning it off than leaving it on there. Logic boards are pretty...

    Upgrading PowerMac G5 Superdrive

Hi Bob, Thanks for the reply - I've checked the site, and they all seem to be IDE. I don't think I can buy from this site, as I am in the UK, but I will have a look around for a UK dealership selling these drives. Do you know if any IDE ATAPI drive will work okay, or does it have to be...

    Upgrading PowerMac G5 Superdrive

Hi, I have been having problems with my PowerMac's superdrive ever since someone persuaded me to reflash the firmware to make it dual-layer, and I have finally decided to bite the bullet and replace it. However, I am confused with what interface I need on the drive. In the System Profiler...

    Macbook pro Battery

Hi, I think the stock batteries that come with the Macbook Pro are currently the best available, but there will probably be some better ones provided by third parties in the future as battery technology improves - there always are. You can buy extra batteries from the Apple Store (although...
