Mac Mini (G4 1.42ghz) Network Issues

I'll check to see if firewall is enabled tonight after work. I'm not sure the windows PC's MS network information is an issue at all, since I'm not even using windows file sharing. FTP is much faster (though not for me right now :()

Mac Mini (G4 1.42ghz) Network Issues

I'm having an odd issue with my mac mini. I'm running the latest OS X release for Tiger. The mini is connected directly to my router and this issue appeared out of no where while before it was working correctly. First, I get very slow transfers to the mini from any computer on my network...

    Ack! Project Builder crashes...

I was all ready to start programming OS X (or learning to, anyway), bought a book and everything (Learning Cocoa with Objective-C 2nd Edition in case anyone cares). I try to start Project Builder, it does its bouncing, and bounces right off =(. So I attempt to run it from Terminal and get the...

What kinds of computers have you owned?

I can remember a Commodore 64 in my past as well as a Tandy 1000. Didn't do much on them other than play games. I've owned probably over two dozen various speed x86-based computers, ones that have made an imprint in my mind: 386sx16mhz (Magnavox.. "Smart, Very Smart"), 486sx33, 486dx4...

    Trying to make the Switch

Smalldog works for me.. But I doubt you will find anything in your budget for what you want. Its Apple, you're going to be paying for *quality*, proprietary PPC hardware. Why exactly were you looking into getting a G4? I'm no Apple fanatic, nor am I anti-Apple. I have a x86 Linux...

700Mhz iBook fast enough to run Jaguar

I'm running Jag on my iBook 600mhz. Let me tell ya, the ram helps. Running it with 128mb was extremely slow, but with 640mb apps launch faster and the system is much more responsive.

    Ideas for Appz!

Sure sounds hard for a novice to do. Imagine the work that must go into creating a web browser that displays pages correctly. I guess you could make a web browser that just lets you download text or something simple like that.

    Nearing the end?

    Ahh, /var/log/system.log -- thanks. I was a bit lazy to check =)

    Nearing the end?

Well I got it from someone after I traded my Pismo for it, is the Applecare warranty transferable? Nope, nothing in the drive. Another question, related to this.. In linux often times if there is a seek error I can check /var/log/messages, is there such a thing in Mac OS X?

    Nearing the end?

Okay, so I just got myself an iBook 600mhz (traded a Pismo 500mhz for it).. Every 10-20 seconds or so it sounds like the drive tries to seek and then skips back. When I'm doing something like typing it doesn't do it, only when its idling. Is the hard drive on its way out? Does the AppleCare...

    Need wireless network advice

I have a Dlink 614+ (which has 22mbps, and 11mbps backwards compatibility), these can be had for like $50 nowadays thanks to rebates and the such, just check some tech forums (forums.anandtech.com is a good one, in the Hot Deals forum). This router is pretty good, offers all sorts of filtering...

how much do you think i should pay for a used 12" 600mhz iBook?

PowerMax.com has them for ~$900 used. Don't know if they have the combo drives, though. I've seen tech. forums with for sale/trade areas sell for around $700.

Booting off of a Firewire CDROM?

I heard that there are ways to boot off of a Firewire CDROM if you don't have an internal one. Is this true? If so, does it matter what kind of firewire drive it is? I held 'T' on my Powerbook and there is this symbol (I believe the Firewire symbol) on the screen as well as the battery life...

    No OS problem.

I'm having a problem with my Powerbook. I was upgrading my Mac OS 9 to 9.2 when it froze because of Norton Antivirus. Now when I boot up it shows a folder with the Mac computer on it and a ?. I imagine I F*d up my install somehow. Now, this powerbook doesn't have a CDROM drive. Is there...

Ok I looked at the CPU there seems to be a white powdery substance (looks like it fried) in the upper right corner of the cpu.

Hard disk just spins, I'm going to take a look at the CPU right now, though. BRB. :)

Anyway to tell if its a blown ethernet controller? If the symptoms you describe aren't present physically, could it still be a bad CPU?
