    Time Machine Exclude System Files

What all gets excluded from a Time Machine backup when you specify 'Exclude All System Files' when selecting to exclude the 'System' folder?? Does this include all of the invisible unix folders? I don't see much reason to back that up since I can always reinstall from CD.

    Corrupted External Drive

A couple days ago while I was working on my desktop computer (PPC G4), Time Machine popped up a message that the backup attempt had failed. When I opened the console to determine what the problem was, I saw these error messages (repeated several times) Error: (5) getxattr for...

    Javascript on Safari 2.0.4

Safari requires standards compliant JavaScript so if you are using a IE specific statement (e.g. document.all) that could be the problem. If you post the code that is giving you problems, I can help you debug it.

    airport problem

Did you revert your network setting back to DHCP? If it is DHCP are you getting a valid IP address (e.g. not like 169.x.x.x)? BTW: The latest version of the Airport Firmware is 9.52 you can see this by click on 'Airport Card' in System Profiler (located in /Applications/Utilities). If you...

Please see my response in your original thread. Also, please refrain from cross-posting in the future as it is considered bad etiquette and in some places will get you banned. FYI: If you accidentally post in the wrong forum, you can always ask a Mod to move your thread to the appropriate...

    airport problem

Here are a few things to try: The original airport cards (802.11b) did not support WPA out of the box. This was added via firmware update, so check to see if your card has the latest firmware version. Check that your airport extreme is configured for a mixed network. If you have it...

How to delete all personal files

As long as you haven't been saving too many personal files outside of your home directory, the simplest way would be to delete your user account and have OS X delete the home folder rather than saving it in the 'deleted users' folder. Next use disc utility to perform a 'erase free space' to...

What mailboxes does Mail use for keep messages on server

I use the IMAP protocol so that I can check my messages on multiple machines and access my email at work via Webmail. Normally this works great, but on occasion, a message or two will go missing. Often because I forgot to close Mail on one of my machines and Mail has flagged the message as...

    External HD not mounting

Does the unmounted drive show up in disc utility? If so, run the verify disc command to find out what is wrong with it. Usually when OS X doesn't mount a drive it is because there is something wrong with the filesystem. You can try running the repair disc command too, but that doesn't always...

    airport in *old* house

The best advice I can give you is to perform a site survey. Once you know how bad your signal propagation issue is you can design your network to deal with it. You'll need a laptop, so if you don't have one see if you can borrow a friends. First, you will need some wireless stumbler software...

    Uncap Time?

Actually, Epoch ("Unix") Time fails for 32 bit systems on Jan 19, 2038 @ 03:14:07 UTC after which the time will rollover to 1901. This is known as the Y2K38 bug. There is no way to remove the limit on your systems' clock because this it is a physical limitation built into the CPU. The way a...

    Exporting mail from Mail.app?

What version of Mail are you running? I know in the older version of mail you could just drag and drop the mailbox to your desktop to back up the mbox file. I'd guess this should still work with the current versions, but not sure since Apple revamped how mail stores messages to better work...

    OSX10.4.8 download

You cannot upgrade from Panther (10.3.x) to Tiger (10.4.x) without purchase and Apple does not offer OS X (any version) via download. You must purchase the disks. Once you purchase Tiger you may be able to find a stand alone update for 10.4.8 or you could use system update to get the latest...

Can Time Machine Backup to Network Without Creating Images

I have leopard installed on my desktop in my home office and the mini connected to my home theater. I would like to have the mini backup to an external drive in my office, since Apple pulled AirDisk support. The drive is being shared via AFP. However, when I attempt to do this, it wants to...

    iPod Partitioning

What exactly are you hoping to accomplish by re-partitioning your iPod? Speaking from experience: messing with the partitions on an iPod will brick it. It is a bit nerve racking to see your iPod boot and then show the missing system folder icon. However, it is actually simple enough to...

Old Mac with USB 1 and iPod?

None of the current iPods have firewire support. Supposedly this was to make them slimmer. You can still charge with a firewire cable, but it will not sync. You can use USB 1.1 with the new iPods, it is just slower.

    Time Machine question

The only way that you would be losing the actual data is if the backup you are deleting is the only remaining backup that contains a link to that version of the file. If the file was changed after that backup was made, you would be losing the oldest version, but still have the newer version(s)...
