Can't use Software Update

I just tried to use Software Update to install 10.5.5, but I got a message that says that I don't have sufficient privileges to install the update. I'm using the original admin account for my Mac, and have installed updates this way in the past. Any ideas?

I currently have 10.5.4 installed.

Well try one of these suggestions:

1. Go to your System Preferences->Accounts and change your password to something else for a minute. Then reboot and go back to system Preferences->Accounts and change you password back to what you want.

2. Go to the folder /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and delete the file com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist. Restart and go back to software update.

Hopefully one or the other of these suggestions may help. Good luck.

Thanks Satcomer, for your suggestions. Sorry it took so long to respond, been putting a lot of hours at work.

I tried both ideas, the Remote Desktop update installed fine, but when I tried to install the 10.5.5 update I got the same message.

I attached a pic of the error message I get. Don't know if that will help or not. If worst comes to worse, I'll just download the combo update at work. I appreciate your help though.

Did you, perchance, do an "Upgrade Install" from 10.4 to 10.5? If so, there's a known issue whereby your original administrator account on 10.4 gets downgraded to a standard user account after the upgrade install to 10.5 and there is no administrator account left on the computer.

If this is the case, follow these instructions to rectify the situation:

That worked. But now I've got another problem. I keep getting "connection reset by peer" or "connection timed out" errors after about 20 or 30 mb have downloaded. Tried a couple of websites besides Apple's and they all do the same. There don't appear to be any updates available for my router, ( a netgear), any ideas on that?

I have an always on Wi-Fi connection. I downloaded several updates to my Macbook, but larger downloads seem to fail just as on the iMac. Both computers access the net through my netgear router. The iMac is wired, the MacBook uses the wireless connection.
