connecting to a public wifi network

I have just got myself a new MacBook, a massive move since my PowerBook of the old days. I live on a boat and use a public wifi network "Squaremile" to connect to the internet, when the machine arrived it booted and connected to the network without problems, ran all the patches and updates, then watched a dvd and walked away.. had a power cut and it eventually shut down.

Now it wont connect to the public network, it can see it but the connection times out

Any ideas?

Stephen

ps, it will connect to a wireless access point.

Was the power cut a local area one? Or just on your boat?

If it was a local area problem, then it's possible the problem lies with the public wi-fi receiver. Maybe it just needs a reset? I had a similar problem at a hotel. My laptop and wireless was fine, but the hotel system needed a reset, which the receptionist couldn't do. Had to wait for the morning :(

nice idea but i am using my old windows note book here on the same connection so if this works then its not the network... its the MacBook

I'd start by deleting the connection to Squaremile from your Network preferences, and then put it back in again. With any luck that'll do the trick.

Just to verify, you can connect OK with your MacBook to another wireless network, just not to your Squaremile connection?

Only "helpful" link that I found...

If you are using any automated keychain passwords, it's possible it could be corrupt and stopping the connection. Also maybe a bad preference file?
I did have a problem where my wireless adapter would connect to the access point, but not the internet. I had to uninstall the program and reinstall.
Good luck...

First try to reset the Pram. If that doesn't work then try one of these steps:

1. Open System Preferences->Network and Location and make a new location then try to connect.

2. Create a new test user account to see if you can connect.

Drastic measures:

3. In /System/Library/Extensions/ delete the files: AppleAirport2.kext & AppleAirportFW.kext . (you must be an Administrator account) . Then after deleting, reboot.

4. In /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and delete the files: com.apple.internetconfig.plist , com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist, com.apple.internetconnect.plist.

5. Clear you caches by deleting /System/Library/Extensions/Caches and restarting.

If none of these help, call Apple if it is under AppleCare.
