Disk Warrior on X drive

I have a new iMac and have placed an old external HD (USB)on for backup of docs/files only (No operating system on the disk). Recently I was told that I could just drag the DW app only and drop it onto my x HD and use it on my iMac HD to rebuild and it would work. I tried to do this and run the program and received a message that DW cannot rebuild the HD because it is the start up drive. I did not boot onto the x HD because it has no system. I use to boot off of the DW CD but read that it works better and faster off of an x HD. My understanding is that I need to boot off of an external source to run DW on my iMac HD, and I don't see how I can run it off of the app only on my external drive without booting up on it (and can't so this with no operating system on the external drive. Is this correct?

Sorry for the lack of understanding,
Glen

You can run disk warrior off of the external but you have to make it bootable just like the CD without an OS on the external drive. You will need the Disk Warrior CD inserted into the optical, then go into applications/utilities/disk utility and select the restore tab. Choose the Disk Warrior CD as the source by dragging the Disk Warrior CD image from the left column to the source box, then choose your external usb HD and drop it in the destination box. Then just do the restore and you should be able to use the external HD to boot into disk warrior and run it on your internal drive.

Have you booted your present iMac to that Disk Warrior CD?
If the DW disk is older than your current iMac, it might not boot to that disk. In that case, you would simply use your iMac restore disks to install OS X on your external drive. When that's complete, you can just copy the Disk Warrior app from your DW disk to that external hard drive. Then you can boot to your external, and run DW from there to rebuild your internal hard drive.

What I would do is put OS X on that external and then you could boot from it and then use Disk Warrior will running off that external and Repair your internal disk.

What i did was have done is have an external that is using the firewire 800 port on my Macs. Then when I bought Disk Warrior I installed it onto my Mac. then I used (constantly) the free Carbon Copy Cloner and made a clone of my Mac to the external. Then i boot to the external and use Disk Warrior on my external. This way it will be fast and I always have a backup I can boot into.
