DVD-R can't be read.

This is odd for me. I picked up some DVD-Rs today as I had some home movies ect to burn. (Gotta keep the old HD roomy) But every time I place in a DVD-R my Mac, it spits them out.

To note I'm using OSX Panther. (10.3.4) My computer is a Superdrive eMac so DVD burning should be no trouble. Hmm, if I can't figure this out by Monday I'll have to call up Apple and see what they have to say. Truthfully, I really do not want to send this eMac in for repairs again.

Just a simple question - do you have DVD-Rs and not DVD+R ? Some superdrives cannot use DVD+Rs at all, although with iLife 05, and Panther, that seems to have changed a little. IMOH, you should not try DVD+R unless you are sure they will work.
Also, try a different brand, this sometimes is the difference that you need.

Ah I see. Good call. I checked and they are DVD+R. I take it I need to get DVD-R instead then? To be honest I had no idea there were two different types like this.

Yes... DVD-R is the only "official" supported DVD media under OS X right now, although DVD+R does work in certain situations. You can also use the DVD+R disks if you have Roxio's Toast or similar burning software.

I would stick with DVD-R, though, as that kind works perfectly with all of Apple's applications and hardware.

And the "dash" DVD-Rs are about the only ones that'll play
in most commercial DVD players. Something of a consideration
for home movies, yes?

I have (I'm embarrassed to say) 9 devices in my home capable of playing video DVDs.

(Among them 2 computers, an SACD changer, a Tivo/burner and a portable player.)

I once tried a video-burned DVD+R in each of them, and I believe 4 worked, 5 did not.

Also, DVD-Rs seem to be quite a bit cheaper than DVD+Rs, at least where I live. My DVD-recorder uses DVD+RW, so I have a few of those. I wish those companies would for ONE time manage to agree on ONE standard, but Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will give us probably the same headaches soon... :/
