free remote desktop connection?

from what i can tell, the only way to do remote desktop connections between two OSX computers is to pay 299 USD for a 10 client thing. Windows has this functionality built-in to XP Pro and 2000, and clent versions are free (even for OSX). Certainly Apple has an option for someone who wants to access one mac from another via the GUI. Yes, i know about ssh, but isn't there some GUI client/server app, even if not from apple, that does this for free? open source or something? 299 bucks to remotely access another mac is outrageous.

wow, thanks for such quick (and useful) replies. and thanks for not being jerks about it. seems like every time i asked a simple question in a windows forum, i got short, snooty, belittling remarks. just another reason to hate M$. i've been reading through the FAQ's and have found loads of useful information. this site is great.

You could wait for Leopard to come out and use iChat.

Remote control takes on a whole new meaning with iChat in Leopard. Thanks to iChat Screen Sharing, you and your buddy can observe and control a single desktop via iChat, making it a cinch to collaborate with colleagues, browse the Web with a friend, or pick the perfect plane seats with your spouse. Share your own desktop or share your buddy’s — you both have complete control at all times. And when you start a Screen Sharing session, iChat automatically initiates an audio chat so you can talk things through while you’re at it.
