Hard Drive Space Problem!

I recently installed a program called AppDelete. I deleted a few apps that I no longer use. I went back to check how much space I had left - ONLY 3.85 GB (down from 20 GB!!!!) Please help me as quickly as possible, thanks in advance!

AppDelete puts the apps and files that it removes in the trash, I believe. Did you then empty the trash?
Sudden large chunks of space lost, are usually some errant app causing logs to be produced, You can lose several GBs fairly quickly. Going into your log folder, and looking for really large files, then trashing those will usually get much of that space back.
Interesting that an app that is supposed to remove some apps seems to have almost filled up your hard drive.... Well, you really can't blame AppDelete as it could just be a coincidence, but check you log folders...

Fact - an app deleter is usually not needed on a Mac. Drag the app you want to remove to the trash, and empty the trash. Most apps would leave a small collection of small files that won't interfere with anything else. Some people do a quick search for files with the name of the app (which is probably all that appdelete does :) ), and delete those few files. As you can see now, some of those so-called helpers can cause problems, and is not often necessary...

*Sigh*... I went into my system and found the AppDelete log - only 8KB. The rest of the logs in there are only 4KB. Did I delete a system file that keeps track of that kind of stuff or what?

Hi there qbkd10! :)

This is Reggie the Developer for AppDelete. I came across this post and I thought I would take a moment to reply. As you found already the AppDelete Log is a small file that just records files that have been deleted. There are no other files that AppDelete creates of any size. There must be another reason this is happening to you. Well if you would like to contact me directly through my site we can communicate further. The link is below my name. Thank you for trying out AppDelete and hope to hear from you! :)

Sincerely,

Reggie

Well for some reason the program uses a "Cache". So maybe deleting the Mac's "Cache" may help. There are several programs that will do this for you like YASU, MainMenu, OnyX and many others at your favorite download site.

To see what is taking up the drive space then download WhatSize.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for helping me with my little problem. And, Reggie, it wasn't your program that was screwing it up, it was a screen recorder that saved 20 hours of screentime in one video totaling 15.8GB! Thanks, Satcomer, for directing me to WhatSize, it helped be root out the bugger. Sorry I was being a stupid idiot, i kinda panicked.

Hi again qbkd10! :)

Well glad to hear it's all ok now and that it wasn't related to AppDelete! ;-) Take care and feel free to contact me anytime...

Sincerely,

Reggie

Glad you figured it out. I was thinking if you are going to be working with more video in the future then an external hard disk (firewire or firewire 800, for the best video performance) to store video files on maybe worth it for your needs.
