I bought a second hand powerbook g4 (osx) a couple of months ago and havent used it since. I've switched it on today and I've forgetten my login password. I've also misplaced the software that came with it due to a house move. i cannot do anything with the bloody thing now!

I'd be v.grateful if someone could advise.

Thanx in advance

Hopefully the person you bought it from has the OS X install disk. If you have just boot from it (hold down the "C" button during startup). When the installer starts, just go to the File menu and in there is a Utility to change the master password (unless the previous owner disabled that). If you don't have the install disk, see if a friend has one (with the same OS version). Here is an Apple article about changing the password (at the bottom of the page). Good luck.

Yep, you're gonna need that OS X install CD, or a time-travel mechanism, or some hypno-subconscious regression techniques. There's no way to get past a forgotten password without the install CD, thank the Good Lord. If it were that easy to get around a forgotten password, Windows users would have every right in the world to be making fun of us!

Actually there is. Won't post it unless I knew for sure the person actually owned the machine.
