How do I share files on a mac and pc

Want to share files on my Mac and Pc Plus be able to print from both.
I am using Vista on the pc and os 10.5.5 on the mac when I try to set up and connect via the mac I get a error 36 message. Both computers are connected through a router and I connect to the internet via
DSL
 
Have you tried connecting to the PC via IP address, instead of computer name?

Is the firewall on the PC perhaps blocking the traffic?

Are all sharing services (SMB, etc.) turned on on either computer? Just to clear that up: you do NOT need to turn on "Windows sharing" to connect TO the PC FROM the Mac, but you do need to turn on "Windows sharing" to connect TO the Mac FROM the PC.
