I can't seem to connect with any of these messenger software (see image). Does anyone have any experience of this?

That's a pretty awesome and informative error message... :)
Do you get that on all accounts? With Adium too?
Do you have any proxies/firewalls on/network nazis controlling outgoing ports?
What does Console tell when you try to connect?

I have downloaded Adium.

I can connect to GoogleTalk, but not Mobileme, AOL or Microsoft messenger.

See console image.

Netgear. I changed the port settings for iChat to SSL 443 (as recommended by Apple Support). However every time I open iChat the port settings revert to the default settings.

So... does this mean "yes, I have a router, and yes, I have a firewall," or "yes, I have a router, and no, I don't have a firewall," or "no, I don't have a router, but yes, I do have a firewall," or "no, I don't have a router and I don't have a firewall?"

:D Yes I have a router and a firewall. Acerbic as ever Ed. Love it.

Taking your prompt, I opened the router control panel and found the Close IM ports ticked. So I unticked it and lo ad behold iChat works. Thank you.
