Has anyone read the small print concerning iLife08 ?

Not all applications work on a given machine. So basically G4 iMacs will not enjoy the new iMovie.

What surprises me the most is the small text used to write this information.

Furthermore on install no clear message is given to the user.

Well, Apple is trying to move on, and an iMac G4 is old and it probably doesn't have the power for it. It works fine on my 1st gen iMac G5
 
yup. probably the very reason why iMovie 6 is included, when no other previous versions ever ship...

they probably realised that these new intel chips are impressive, and the actual challenge lay in scaling back to the old powerpc. G5 was manageable, but G4 was too much of a struggle, when not many of the installed user base would likely have a G4... cynical?

Not sure what you mean - both G4s that I have installed iLife 08 showed a clear message through the installer that iMovie 08 would not be installed. And, it seems quite clear in the system requirements. You need a more powerful processor for iMovie. Maybe it's a clue that you can now justify that new Mac purchase - :D
 
My point was : WHY IN SMALL PRINT.

iTunes is free, iMovie doesn't work on G4, needs iDVD without iMovie. So that leaves iPhoto.

Isn't iLife a little expensive to buy to just be able to use iPhoto?

I fully understand the legacy issue, but if iLife works only partially on old machines, there should be a possibility to only purchase those applications that will work.

Such constraints should be in BIG print.

I purchased iLife being enticed to think all applications would work on my iMac. Furthermore the small text needs very very careful reading before it can be understood.
 
Really, Apple should put separate prices on these apps, you think? What's iPhoto's worth... 40, 50 bucks? iDVD could sure go for 99. The new iMovie would probably cost around 50 as well. Another 30 for the old one, although I guess it actually does _more_ than the new one, so let's put 50 on that as well. And GarageBand, did you forget about that or just leave it out because of its value? What about iWeb. I don't necessarily care for that, but some might... Seriously, though, I don't think that would fly well. The thing with iLife is: It's a _great_ suite perfectly worth its price. If you bought iLife '08 for iMovie '08 and are stuck now, I understand some anger. I'd look for the return policy, then. But in all other cases, iLife '08 is still worth the money. But its main thing, really, is that it comes free with every new Mac. The older versions work fine with the older Macs as well.
 
As for the old version of iMovie, iLife 08 does not replace the older 06 version. So, you are not exactly stuck. The other apps in iLife 08 are perfectly OK with a G4 processor. You also didn't mention the other major parts of iLife - Garageband and iWeb.
Personally, the iPhoto updates are worth the purchase price of the iLife for me.
 
There is a way around the requirement, but it's probably not legal, and probably not worth it - but I would be interested to see how well it performs under a G4.

Edit: It seems like it runs well, with little/no crashes, and not too many beachballs (though the poster was probably using a 1.67 PB)

Minis may be out of luck as you need a core image supported card:

Ok, I forgot about GarageBand and iWeb - I cannot vouch for their quality which I understand is great. But I don't use them. I have them because I have to buy them... otherwise no iMovie, iDvd, etc.. which I use.

As per the return policy, Fryke, I'm afraid Apple says "no" because I have installed iLife and that there was a comment on the box. As if I spend my time reading minute print. I mean Apple has built into me the belief that "it will work". Not anger, just baffled by the decision to use "small print".

Also, to those recommending the hardware upgrade, since when does one upgrade simply because there is an application update? I thought that type of approach was reserved for Bill's products....
 
I suppose you could talk to someone who uses ProTools software/hardware packages, for a reasoned response to that question. ProTools version upgrades are almost always accompanied by hardware updates.
You get to pay if you want to play with the new stuff. Microsoft is certainly not alone with that...

Or, you can stay with the same software, which you already use and know, or trade up to a system that can handle the iMovie 08. -

Or, you can get your iLife 08 for free! (with any new Mac :) )
 
Agreed, I do not have all the science of who does what and how.

But I must insist. WHY THE SMALL TEXT?

Is it shameful for Apple to announce that certain "old" systems will not support new software. A four year old system certainly does not have all the capabilites of their latest system so new software may not work. Anyone will agree to that.

Only Apple did not announce this, an they chose minute text to state this on the iLife box. If you bought iLife'08 take a look at the box. And reading the box the first sentence leads you to think everything is ok....

My point is with THE SMALL TEXT.

Anyway enough of this, this is a technical forum. So readers, if you plan to buy iLife'08 read the small text to make sure your mac is powerful enough if you plan to use iMovie
 
My PowerPC G4 does not have an inbuilt DVD drive, so I have to use an external device. Unfortunately, iDVD won't work with it (I use VLC).

My processor can't possibly manage the latest incarnation of iMovie.

iWeb is OK, but I much prefer jAlbum (which is free).

Garageband sounds great if you are into that sort of thing. I'm not.

So that leaves iPhoto. Do I want to spend £50 just to upgrade this programme? I am not sure I do.

My point is that there are many users like myself who simply can't upgrade expensive hardware that frequently.

I would like it if Apple would let me purchase the iPhoto upgrade separately.
 
I have yet to get iMovie to work, it launches all right, then starts doing something and about 5 seconds later it quits. Even after installing the "update" it does the same thing. Have not had time to troubleshoot it.
 
Just an idea...

I know iLife tries to talk with mothership Apple, I suppose for licence related issues. So if you are not web-connected, this may result in a long wait and maybe even a crash.
 
iLife doesn't talk home about the license unless you tell it to register with Apple AFAIK. The other "homecalls" it makes are about help-files updated on the internet and template-stuff.
