Imac problem

recently i have been having some problems with my Imac Version 10.5.6.
Whenever i try to turn it on, the white screen with the apple logo appears as normal, then a grey screen (slightly transparent) comes down from the top of the screen and i get a message saying that i need to restart my computer or hold the power button for a few seconds. After i do this and turn it on again, the same thing happens. This has been occurring very regularly and some days it will not come on at all and i just have to keep restarting it.

When it does come on, i am given this error message;

I looked up something on the apple website that says it could be due to any new software or hardware that i have installed however the only thing i did install was Safari 4..

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thankyou

Chris

With the error "panic(cpu 1 caller 0x001A9C68): Kernel trap at 0x00198d3c, type 14=page fault, registers:" take it in ASAP because it is HARDWARE!

hey, cheers for the reply! is it definatley a hardware problem then? is there any way i can run a hardware check myself before taking it in? appreciate the help..

hmm ok so i used the startup disk and performed the hardware check, which didn't show any problems, i havent installed any new software of late....confusing.

If your problem started after you installed the Safari 4 beta, and continues even after uninstalling that beta (using the uninstaller that comes with that beta), then the kernel panic might simply be software related. You can try an Archive & Install of OS X, which is booting to your OS X reinstaller DVD, and choosing the Option to Archive & Install.
Might help, and certainly won't hurt at this point.

Kernel panics could be a ton of things. What model iMac is it? Have you added memory to it? Any others peripherals plugged into it? Any other changes besides the Safari 4 beta? Sounds like if it kernel panics at start-up it more leans towards hardware related.
