iMac won't fully boot

Hi everybody!

I have an iMac G4 (lamp post) running OS 10.4. It boots normally until the blue screen with the white box that reads "Mac OS" and has a status bar. It hangs there indefinitely. I still have use of the mouse. After ten minutes of inactivity the power saver (black screen) comes and and can be stopped by typing or mouse movement.

I've rebooted at least 100 times with the same results. I've left the machine on overnight twice with the same results.

I've booted from my install CD and repaired both permissions and the HD at least 10 times each.

I've reset my PRAM only once using this command"
0 > reset-nvram
0 > reset-all
at the Open Firmware prompt.

Odd detail: Before going into power save mode, the cursor is the normal arrow. After the iMac comes out of power save mode, the cursor is an arrow when on the blue part of the screen, but the 'busy circle' when not on the blue part of the screen.

What's my next step?

Any advice will be appreciated!

You internal hard disk might have went South. Fist boot into single-user mode. Then in that mode run /sbin/fsck -fy. Let that run through (until you get another prompt). If is says it had to repair anything, run the command again and keep running it until it doesn't repair anything anymore. IMHO fsck is stronger that Disk Utility in trying to repair a disk.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try tonight and post the results.

1) I did a PRAM reset. No change to the boot process.

2) Dropped into single-user mode. Ran the /sbin/fsck -fy command and it showed no errors. Ran it again to double check and got the same result. I then ran a command to boot the machine.

The machine resumed booting to the blue screen but showed no white "Mac OS" box. Machine then went back in command line/start-up. Displayed is the error "Workaround Bonjour: Unknown Error 0"

Just wanted to update this thread while I research that error.
