Hey I have a Macbook pro with Imovie 08 I have been using it successfully until tonight. I have a project i need to do and anytime i click on the music icon or try to open any music it quits unexpectedly. Origninally it was letting me open the music and play it and would only quit when i tried to drag the clip over. I somehow accidently changed the view to the album covers and now it wont even open. Any ideas how to fix this so i can add music to my project.?

Try and create a generic admin user account for testing. Log into that account and see if iMovie works in the different account to see if a user issue or app issue. I'd be almost willing to bet its a user issue.

Sorry to be dumb but how to a create a generic user account...do you mean when i sign into my computer or just for imovie? any help is appreciated..thanks

Create a new user account by visiting the "Accounts" pane in the System Preferences.

Sometimes crashes are related to a specific preference file under a specific user account. Creating a new user, logging in as the new user, then using iMovie will tell you whether the crashing problem is user-account-related (it crashes under your old account but works fine under the new account) or is perhaps system-related (it crashes under both old account and new account).

When you're done testing iMovie under the new account, simply log out, log back into your old account, visit the "Accounts" pane of the System Preferences, and delete the user account you created for testing.

Also, iMovie has deeply embedded hooks into the Quicktime subsystem. If you've added any Quicktime codecs (Perian, Flip4Mac, etc.), you may try temporarily removing them to see if iMovie behaves any better.

thanks ill try that...does that mean i will have to reimport my clips into the imovie again and upload music.? or will it see what is on my other account.?

If your media (clips, music, etc.) is stored in a publicly-accessible place (i.e., NOT in your user folder -- users do not have access to each other's files), then you can simply import and go.

If your media is not in a publicly-accessible place, then you will have to re-import and re-upload and whatever else.

This process may also shed light on whether the problem is, as stated before, a user-account problem, or whether it may be related to the specific clips and media you're using. Does iMovie crash if you use different clips and/or music?

Oh my god i love you it worked! So I can make my movie cuz i have a deadline on my test account...but how do I go about fixing my normal profile.? Any suggestions?

Go back to original account and then the first thign (without opening any programs) navigate to the folder /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and find the file com.apple.iMovie.plist (and any other older iMovie preferences) and throw them into the trash. Then launch iMovie and see if that worked. You will have to go into iMovie's preferences (in the program) to reset you personal preferences for the program.
