iTunes won't open .aac files

I've got some .aac files which I made a long time ago on my PC with winamp; I was surprised after bringing them over to my iBook last week that they won't play on iTunes. I'm not getting any error message for this; it's like iTunes doesn't even acknowledge that they exist.

Is there any explanation or fix for this? (OS 10.3.5/iTunes 4.7.1)

Is the file extension .aac? That could be the problem as AAC files are in MPEG-4 format which has the extension .m4a

I read somewhere recently that iTunes has trouble accepting MPEG4 (AAC) files made with utilities other than iTunes/QuickTime, or made on a different platform.

I'm still trying to dig up a link...

Well, I did try naming them .m4a, but no dice. I could convert them to mp3, I suppose, but I think I will really notice the loss of quality. I guess re-burning is probably the only solution for now...
