Kernel Panic

Have been experiencing kernel panics every so often lately. I just did a hardware test on my iMac late 2006 model. The code error received is: 4MOT/1/40000003:HDD could you please tell me what this means? Thank you

Looks like the hard drive, or the hard drive controller (located on the logic board), or the fan associated with the hard drive bay... or perhaps a combination of them. Specifically, one or more of them is not properly functioning.

"MOT" typically indicates a fan. "HDD" typically indicates a hard drive.

If you like to tinker and are experienced with the inside of a computer, you may be able to fix it yourself, if it's only the hard drive (or perhaps the fan). If not, an Apple Authorized Repair Center should be able to diagnose and correct the problem (the UNfree route, as your computer is probably out of warranty).

This error is not specifically the hard drive, but the hard drive fan.
The error is often that the fan has stopped working allowing the hard drive area to get too hot, and then you get the kernel panic.
So, you have a fan that is plugged with dust/dirt, or simply stopped working.

It could be the drive causing the fan to go nuts. I've seen at least a few occasions with the aluminum iMac's where the drives will get really hot when they are their way out. Feel the back near the top at the vent and if it feels pretty hot, the drive is probably going. If you don't even feel any air coming out, then it might be the fan died. You can install istat pro and it will show you all the status and speeds of your fans. Considering the kernel panics I'd bet on the drive is going out. Back your stuff up while you can.
