Keychain vs. Safari - - - is Safari not keychain compatible?

Safari does not recognize anything to do with Keychain. Is Safari not "keychain aware?"

Desired endstate was to have keychain automatically input the userid and pw for this website and others like it.

System Panther 10.3.7, Safari 1.2.4

Never attempted keychain or File Vault back when System 10 first came out due to extreme warnings to avoid both like the plague. Assuming that maybe Keychain, at least, won't hose the system, I revisited Keychain under System 10.3.7. Nothing, nata, Safari doesn't interact with keychain at all. I still won't go near File Vault due to the horror stories.

Why didn't Apple make Safari "keychain aware?" If it "is" keychain aware, how do I troubleshoot (the keychain and safari help files are no help). Unable to find definitive troubleshooting steps in Ted Landau's book either.

I'll very much appreciate your comments and insights. I highly appreciate all the hard work being carried out on MacOSX.com website.

Cheers,
Adonsa

I think what you are looking for is in Safari's Preferences under AutoFill. Is this what you are talking about?

Thanks, Satcomer, for your reply,

Well, no, autofill pulls from the address book and two other sources; I can't find any cross-walk or link between autofill and Keychain. I think the mission of autofill is to pull stuff from the address book to fill out javascript forms and stuff like that.

If there is an interface between Keychain and Safari, then it's elusive.

Thanks again,

Autofill prefs include user names and passwords. Of course, these would be also stored in your Keychain. I don't think the link is manually controlled, as the password would not be stored out in the clear, so Keychain would get involved here, as it's one of the other sources used by Autofill.
If you open the Keychain Access utility, and open your keychain file there, you should see listed your internet sites that use authentication.

Yeah, the option "User names and passwords" in the AutoFill part of Safari's preferences uses the keychain to store those. If you have it on, when you go and put in a user name and password in a form, a dialog will drop down asking if you want to add it to the keychain.

But I don't believe the message acutally states that it wil store the passwords in Keychain. It does, of course, but the message doesn't mention it.

Open Keychain and look around in it. It will give you an idea of the kind of information it stores. One neat feature is that you can create an encrypted note in it.

Keychain is used automatically by various Apple programs.

my safari uses keychain all the time. the first time i entered a password in safari it asked me if i would like it to store the info, i said yes and the next time i lanched safari, keychain came up and asked me if i would give safari permission to decript keychain. i had three options, allow, always allow, and not allow. i told it always allow, and it never asked again untill a system update, at which point i tell it allways allow, and i never see it again. it runs seamlessly. i also use msn messanager and ichat, and the first time i entered account info in, i also got keychain diag's asking if i wanted the information saved. so i think you may of told keychain to dissalow safari, and now it ignores the broswer. try going into keychain its self and see if there is a way to reset it so that the next time you do something, it'll ask again.
